What does Honen think of Samantha? It seems like Samantha is a far more advanced robot than what he's capable of making. Is he interested in her in any
way?

Honen doesn't seem to have much interest in Samantha. Most of Honen's inventions are war machines, and she was more of a worker and an experiment in
creating AI as advanced as a human's intelligence - something Honen would not have programmed into his robots even if he knew how since he didn't want
to run the risk of them rebelling or trying to overtake his operation.
Even if he did have any interest in her, Samantha doesn't quite trust him yet, so I don't think she'd let him get too close to her. I actually had an idea for a story involving them, but I'm so far behind on the AT stuff that I don't know if I'll ever get around to writing it. |

I know this is usually not a concern in cartoons, but it seems to me that it would be completely unrealistic for Honen to have built (single-handedly, no less)
the things he built, UNLESS he first built simple robots to help him build other, more complex robots, and so on (so things could progress exponentially)

True, but his worker robots were much simpler things than Samantha. Torque and Flune were capable of both being worker robots and fighting.
Honen probably doesn't see Samantha as being any more useful to him than just having a normal person around. I also think there may have been some sort of paternal complex involved when Zimosa created Samantha. He probably made her look like a young girl so he could think of himself as being her father. Honen prefers to make his robots into more abstract shapes and creatures.

It probably has something to do with being an Oni - they may not require as much sleep as humans do. But just like humans, the older they get, the less they're able to do stuff like that, as Honen found out when he continued to live that lifestyle into his 30's. |

Did you derive the name of the world of Phainein from the Greek meaning "to cause to appear" or "to show"?

Unless it was done subconsciously, I don't think I did.
When I originally came up with the word, I used it to describe reoccurring locations in dreams, especially those with connectivity. I derived it from "Fantasy" and "Environment". Eventually, I just started calling the world in my comics by that name. |

Oops, yeah, I kinda forgot that I mentioned that in that sketch. That's something I haven't really explained yet.
The original idea of the old IA comics was to have characters exploring a post-apocalyptic world. I got this idea from long car rides when I was a kid and as I'd watch the buildings go by, I'd think, "What if there were no people and you could just explore anywhere and go in any building or house that you wanted to?" Well, as a result of the apocalypse in Phainein, there were a lot of people and creatures that were mutated into these weird masses of slimy gunk. They would ooze out of cracks and shadows in the walls and try to absorb other life forms into them. Separate goop zombies could fuse together into a larger mass or split apart into smaller ones. They inhabited a lot of areas and made them dangerous to explore. When I wrote the preliminary untitled episodes, Honen was the main villain, and he was pretty much written to be completely evil. But when I started the main series I began to think of Honen as not being entirely bad pretty early on, because one scene involving the goop zombies I remember writing was when Zumo got thrown into a ring of them and Christopher saved him. Because of that, Honen let Christopher go in another encounter a short while later when he could have easily crushed him with one of his machines. |

I wondered about that "goop zombie" thing, too, when I first read it, assumed it would eventually be explained, and then forgot all about it.
It seems like Honen has a bird/dinosaur fetish. |

I wouldn't be surprised if a character like Honen would shrug off Samantha because it seems like Honen thinks HIS
technology is superior to everyone else's and the only interest I could imagine he'd have in her would be proving that he's right about that. I
imagine his thoughts on that might be along the lines of, "I can create machines that can conquer ze world with MY technology, and you can only produce...
an ordinary girl? Ha ha ha!!"

Isn't the technology that was used to make Samantha ancient, and no longer available?

Isn't the technology that was used to make Samantha ancient, and no longer available?Yeah. The spirits of Time and Space gave Zimosa that technology, but there are still only so many resources and much knowledge of the technology was lost in the apocalypse. I don't see Honen as being too illogical...I'm not sure what you mean by this. I don't think anyone is saying that he is. Edit - Well, I guess what Crawl is saying is that Honen wouldn't fool himself into thinking his technology is superior when he knows something else is. But in the case of Samantha, it's in the eye of the beholder. He probably doesn't feel a normal person is superior to giant machines that can fly and destroy things. In that case, I think Agisuro is basically just saying the same thing I said earlier.

It seems like Honen has a bird/dinosaur fetish. ...which I find weird considering that it was lizardmen who destroyed his species. Maybe it's like Batman where Bruce Wayne was afraid of bats, so he made himself into one to be scary to his enemies. I guess the thing about Samantha, though, is that she isn't just an ordinary girl. Isn't she also supposed to be super-strong and designed specifically for working in hazardous areas? And she presumably doesn't age, so it seems like something like her could be useful - maybe even as a personal bodyguard. |

I was thinking this over the other day. When humans employ other humans, it seems to me that the most common things people are employed to do are
"robot tasks". Stuff that doesn't really require much creativity, but for which someone needs to be there to physically move things around. The
job I had at Fed Ex loading packages onto trucks probably fits this description most obviously, but probably every job I ever had has aspects of it.

If Samantha was created through the technology of the Spirits of Time and Space, could that mean that she was created through semi-magical means? That seems
like a reason for Honen not to be interested in the technology involved.
Similarly, did Honen ever take interest in the technology of other things like the towers or the CRASHER space station? |

I think some of you are projecting a bit.
I don't see Honen as being too illogical... C'mon! He isn't Mr. Spock or Egon Spengler. Is waging a one-man (and worm) war against entire races for world domination logical? I'm glad you like the character enough to ponder this type of thing, but he is what he is, and he tends to be more driven by his emotions than logic. On the other hand... That's not necessarily how he thinks about her, either. I also already addressed some of these issues with this: . And she did rebel against Zimosa (and the Quixotic Tigers, but then again, so did Honen). One thing I can imagine is that Honen probably would like someone to pass his knowledge onto, and Samantha might be a good choice, but like I said in my first reply, she doesn't trust him (she doesn't trust Lukyan or Tomi, either), so that probably wouldn't work unless their relationship improved. |

If Samantha was created through the technology of the Spirits of Time and Space, could that mean that she was created through semi-magical means? That seems like a reason for Honen not to be interested in the technology involved.Sorry. Forgot to reply to these earlier. It was really just knowledge the Time & Space spirits passed on to the humans of Phainein (and earlier, Darlos), not the magic itself. The magic came from the spirits that were already on the planet. Similarly, did Honen ever take interest in the technology of other things like the towers or the CRASHER space station?Again, Honen wasn't really meant to make a lot of sense in the old stories, he was just comic relief. But anyway, I imagine the technology he uses is based on whatever he can find, so some of it may be the advanced stuff that Harken and Kin-Liu gave to the planet, and some may have been even older-world technology. The robot/airship thing he built for the pirates was more along the lines of "steampunk" than anything more advanced. |

Honen reminds me of a high school gym teacher where I went to school. He was also short, screamed a lot and you couldn't always understand him, and he
tended to call people by what they looked like instead of their names.
