Today's feature, Agony! FO liked the box art, so
here's a chance to see what the actual game is like!
Okay, for some reason WinUAE isn't responding to my USB controller anymore and I neglected to get a picture the first time, so you'll just have to take my word that all the plot you get is "a guy turns into the Psygnosis mascot to fight evil."
HOLY SHIT
So yeah, it's a shooter where you play as an owl. The first level takes place over some violent water, which you have to see in motion to believe. Here's a dead dragon!
Unfortunately, I quickly realized Agony is style over substance. While it's got some really cool scenery and the animation is (mostly) great, enemies just lazily fly in for you to shoot.
Your options are swords that float above and below you (And I liked the wrecked boat in the background)
And your fully powered shot takes up half the screen. Needless to say, the first two stages are pretty boring, pretty graphics aside.
The first boss, some kind of marlin made of water or something. The first time I fought him he seemed to take forever to kill.
But then I realized this little trick, which wastes him in about five seconds.
Loading screen for the second stage.
The second stage starts out in front of some waterfalls.
I just thought that wisp enemy was pretty.
It eventually moves into a forest at sunset.
I'm pretty sure that guy riding the flying insect (he's hard to see) is from Shadow of the Beast II.
Two swords! So yes, I've pretty much got the entire screen covered.
The second boss, a guy riding some land dragonfly.
I got killed here but was too close to the bottom of the screen to get a good picture of the owl's death. I was able to get his neat respawn though, where he appears as an outline raining glitter.
Loading screen for the third stage. Also, the game asks you to switch discs here.
Stage 3 is a swamp. Lots of water in this game.
There were actually some really cool things happening here, some I didn't get pictures of. You can see some cape on a cross in the background (it just to the lower right of those green enemies at the top of the screen), which was billowing in the game, and somewhere there was a dragon in the background that raised itself up and looked around.
Here we are! Incidentally, I lost pretty much all my lives within a minute, as enemies started clogging up the screen and I got too weak.
Eh, I forgot to shrink this image, but I guess you can take this as an example of the size WinUAE plays the games at.
EDIT: Okay, I guess either WinUAE or my controller didn't like WS_FTP being open, because once I closed it and restarted WinUAE it responded to my controller. Here's the single screen of story you get:
