She called and left a message while I was out. She said she was too tired from yesterday's trip to do anything, but she wants you to call her when you get home. When I left there today, Lady had gotten on one of the "lookouts" I built for her (plastic storage totes with a blanket laid over them). She sprawled out in front of the window and went to sleep. Today was the day of our big move with the UHaul truck. We did get my brother to help today. We moved all the big stuff -- the two futons, the bed, the treadmill, all remaining cat furniture, the computer desk... We got the $30 truck, and it took us two trips. We miraculously dropped off the truck right before 5 when the place closed. The second time we unloaded the truck, we just put everything on the lawn and the porch so we could get it done as quickly as possible. We left the computer behind because we still haven't transferred the phone and internet. So, I'm typing this while sitting on the floor at the old apartment. But tonight will be the first night that we stay at the new place -- with all the kitties. Lady is grouchy. She probably had the idea that she would be an only-cat, and is now upset to learn she'll have to share us and the house with the other cats. Hopefully she'll adjust. At least she's doing what she'd be doing anyway, lounging in the sunroom. Pepper and Hermes are getting along okay pretty much off the bat. Hermes is a little scared of Lady. So, he isn't going past the sun room or into the basement. Other than that, he's been playing on his furniture. Nothing bothers Pepper. She had fun looking around. After that, she found one of the look-outs FO set up upstairs. She loved it. She got up there and has been napping there for a while. Caramel, however, is very upset. She has been hiding under the futon. We kind of expected her to be like this, but maybe in a couple of days she'll be back to normal. Some stuff was really tough to get upstairs. The poof chair was surprisingly difficult. So was the mattress (because it wasn't stiff). But, anyway, all that difficult stuff is done now. We still have some stuff here at the apartment, but it should only take a few trips in the car to wipe it out. I think it's mostly stuff like food and plates. I believe the upstairs is absolutely empty. She slept with us for most of the night last night, and I think that reassured her and made her feel better. She purred a few times. She's also starting to discover the windows, which I'm sure she'll eventually love. I think all of the classic cats slept upstairs for part of the night, but Lady was in her little sun room nook. One good thing about moving the computer desk was that it gave me the chance to tighten up the screws. Now it doesn't sway or squeak if you try to shake it. The two I missed, though, were on the bottom of the platform that holds the computer itself; I couldn't get a screwdriver under there. (They were so loose I could partially tighten them with my fingers) Maybe I can try again later. It's really cool to be able to fit two sofas side by side in the living room. The pizza huts around here suck, though. They don't allow online delivery to our house for some bizarre reason. I ordered a pizza before heading home last night (neither of us felt up to cooking), and first thought I'd go with pizza hut anyway; I could just pick it up on the way home. But the more convenient one had a severely stripped down menu compared to the old one. So I just went with papa johns, and it got there before I did (FO went on ahead) There are some things I had taken for granted after living in an apartment for so long. For example, there were no barking dogs there, but there are some here. Ah, well. Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I felt really bad for Mel when she was hiding (she first hid in the ornamental fireplace, behind my stereo and speakers, then later under the futons), but I don't think she's doing as badly now. When I came home from work she was out and about and exploring around. She won't go near Lady if she sees Lady, but she's not starting fights with her either and seems fine so long as they're apart. The house is big enough that they can easily stay away from each other. In fact, Mel is doing much better there than she was that time we took her to visit Crawl's mother's place. Lady has reverted to being like she was at the shelter - lying like a lump in the sun and doing little else. She stills squeaks and comes to me when I walk in the door, but as soon as she sees another cat, she growls and runs off to either the sun room or the basement. I think eventually she'll adjust, though. It's gotta be a little rough to deal with three strange cats all at once. If I could have introduced them more slowly, I would have, but time and money just didn't allow it. She hasn't rolled at my feet since I brought Mel and Pepper in, but I think once she gets used to them she'll be back to her normal self. Mel was like that for the longest time when we first got Pepper, then one day I came home from work and they both walked up to me and Mel turned and licked Pepper's forehead. Then it took even longer for her to get used to Hermes, but she eventually did, so I think Lady will, too. Pepper did howl in the middle of the night, and I went looking for her to calm her. At least there was no more worries that it would wake a neighbor and we'd be kicked out. Hermes has been having a ball, though. Every time I walked in and out the door yesterday, it was like a game of "Where's Waldo?" but with Hermes. Stuff isn't put away yet, so it's strewn all over the place and he would find a different piece of furniture or random stack/pile of objects to get into. So far, I haven't noticed him starting any fights with Lady, either. He might remember her. I don't know if she remembers him or not, although she's probably not happy about it either way. It's weird being back at this apartment and not having any kitties here. I don't have to close the door every time I take stuff in and out anymore. Even with it being nearly empty, this place looks and feels so small now. www.flyingomelette.com

She doesn't have much of a problem with Lady, either, except that Lady is still being grumpy and if she growls at Mel enough, Mel will hiss back and run off. Lady has shown some improvement, though. She tries to come visit with us, but can only take being around the other cats for so long before she growls and runs off to the sun room again. She's started rolling again (somewhat), but she acts like the little kid who's mad and is given an ice cream, and eats it, but acts angry about it the whole time. I think with Mel it's possible that she's gotten so used to there being other cats around that she's not so affected by there being another one anymore. Mel and Pepper also haven't fought at all yet since they've been in the new house. I imagine that might change as living conditions slowly return to normal (ie, I put more stuff away and there's more room for them to play). Mel and Pepper both love looking out the windows. Mel actually gets behind the blinds, up onto the windowsill itself. Mel also discovered the sun room windows yesterday and got up on Lady's lookout while Lady was busy running around in the basement.

He's amazing. Caramel was whining about that window, because she was looking out it, but kind of had to stretch from the stairs to it; she wasn't able or willing to get on the ledge. Pepper likes sleeping on the downstairs lookout. She looks out the window and then takes a nap. Sometimes when Caramel wants on the lookout, she just jumps directly over Pepper to get there. So far that hasn't led to fighting. Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Lady made it all the way up the stairs this morning to greet us when we woke up, which I think is the first she's been upstairs since I brought the other cats home. But she spotted Hermes under the bed and went to hide in the bathtub. I had to wait for her to leave before I could take a shower. Another thing she does - if she sees a bird in the backyard, she rockets from the lookout, down the basement stairs, and back up again. I don't know how else to describe it aside from a big furry rocket-powered barrel.

It turns out this hasn't been much of a problem. FO almost always parks in the driveway. Most of the time, I park on the street in front of our house or, failing that, in front of either of the neighbor's houses. If there ever came a time when every spot on the street was taken, I don't think it'd be a tragedy for us both to park in the driveway, and for me to back out before FO if necessary. The neighbors frequently have two or even three cars in their driveway at once.

I read an editorial where someone said that the only way the economy would improve is if people start buying more consumer goods and services again and if housing prices would go up again (yeah, put all the pressure on those of us who don't have any money). So, yeah, this is a good situation for us. We bought when prices had bottomed out and if prices are going back up, maybe the economy will improve and I can get better employment. Although I should point out that the article you linked does specifically say the prices of newly-constructed homes has gone up. Our house isn't newly-constructed. There's really nothing we can do but ride it out and do our best to survive. I'm going to give that zoo interview everything I've got. The pay is not as good as what I made at the glass company, but it's definitely enough to survive on (especially since I won't have a car payment in 3 years), and I'd LOVE to work there. I probably won't have much to actually do with the animals (it's data entry and customer service), but I'd probably at least get to see them. www.flyingomelette.com

We don't have anything to sit on down there! I was thinking we'd eventually move a futon down there, but that would only be after we'd get a big sofa to fill up our living room, and it'll take a bit of time to save up for something awesome like this! (Especially since I'd probably want all the fancy stuff - a sleeper sofa, recliners [probably two, so FO and I could each have one], and a chaise). One possibility I was mulling over was getting a poof chair for the basement. I was thinking I probably don't need a big one like we have now -- a medium one might suffice. FO said I should just take the one we have upstairs and put it downstairs. I had a few problems with that. It was pretty hard getting it upstairs to begin with. What if I don't like it in the basement and want to put it back upstairs? That'd be a huge pain. And it might be a little annoying to have to move it at all. It might be too big for the basement -- especially if we ever do get a futon down there. And though we were assured this house's basement doesn't have flooding problems, it'd be worse if a more expensive chair was ruined if water ever did get in there. But I was thinking it over more, and maybe it's not such a bad idea to move the big one down there. At least it would cost nothing, and I'd be 100% sure it'd at least be big enough. What I'll probably actually do is take no action at all, at least not until it becomes a bit more clear what the budget is like. Okay. But it's a huge rip-off because they only cover accidental death. If we'd die in a car crash, there's a good chance that both of us could be in the car at the same time. So, what are the odds that one of us would die in an accident, but not the other? And another reason it seems like a huge rip off to not cover all deaths is that the insurance pay off would be less and less each year that goes by without us dying. We're in our 30's, so we're not terribly likely to die of a heart attack any time soon. By the time heart attacks become more of a risk, more of the mortgage will be paid off.
