Clearly Link to the Past has spoilt me, both with its linear no-fannying-about dungeon progression and short and sweet bosses.

It's possible to do a lot of the Dark World Dungeons out of order, though.

Or just turn it off at that point.

Honestly, I was really surprised when Kefka "won" in Final Fantasy 6. I know the game itself kind of spoils it by including a map of both the World of Balance and the World of Ruin, but I hadn't been using the map and had long forgotten about that.

I also thought the ghost part in Link's Awakening was kind of touching. Maybe because I found that house earlier and the lone tombstone and wondered about them, so I knew right away where to go.

Unless it was killed in the hacker attack, somewhere on this forum I made several posts what dungeons in ALttP could be beaten out of order. Technically, you can beat almost any dungeon in any order you want. You'd just need to play through them long enough to get the item needed for the next dungeon. In other words, you'd normally have to do the Dark Palace first, but if you just got the hammer and left, the rest of the overworld is opened to you.
