Well, we might not need two kittens. But the advantage of getting two would be that you'd have two siblings. So,
it'd be less breaking up of a family. And they might end up being a pair of cats that would cuddle together all the time (which seems uncommon with cats
that don't grow up together).

I can't believe Crawl didn't post about this!
There must be something about our cats stealing Crawl's food. Yesterday, there was Hermes stealing his leftover spaghetti. Last night, he cooked a cinnamon bun in the microwave and took it to the bed to eat it. Pepper smelled it and came up the stairs into the bed. At first, she walked up to me, but she saw I didn't have anything and she continued to sniff the air. Then she turned around and walked over to Crawl. At first, she just sat down patiently, as though she would wait for him to give her a piece. Then she got impatient and put a paw on his arm. Then she proceeded to climb up on him and grab a small piece of the bun off his plate in her mouth! She just took it like she assumed it was okay to do so without permission. She took it to the middle of the bed and ate a little bit of it. When she was done, she settled down and started cleaning herself, looking really satisfied about it. |

Does Pepper have family in Italy???
A site reader from Italy sent me these pictures of "Lulu". She looks enough like Pepper to be related. |

That cat looks so much like Pepper it made me wonder if Pepper is a particular breed and I tried to find more information on it, but I couldn't find
anything relevant. Even though Pepper is very small, she's apparently still not small enough to be considered a dwarf cat.
Man, in doing these searches, I noticed a lot of people on message boards and places like Yahoo Answers asking questions like, "Where can I get a cat that stays a kitten?" People, if you can't accept that kittens become adults eventually, then you shouldn't get one. It's not like adult cats don't have their perks, too. When I made my lunch, I had three kitties in the kitchen. Oh my, I can just imagine it if we get 1 or 2 more... |

Awhile ago, Crawl posted that video of Caramel getting high on a catnip banana and wriggling away. This morning, Hermes came downstairs, and Caramel tried to hide behind a shoe. She flattened herself way down and put her ears down. He could still see her, of course, but he went over to the food bowls and proceeded to eat. Caramel rolled over onto her side and started wriggling towards him. Does she really think he can't see her when she does that? |

I thought I had downloaded all of Codie's cat pictures to my hard drive (evidently, I didn't), but I ran a search on "dufie" to try to find
them. They didn't turn up, but this did:
Okay, that does it. We've gotta keep adopting cats until we get two that'll do this. |

That's when they were younger, and they don't get together anymore (in fact, they tend to growl or hiss at each other when the other gets too close).
Sukie got more into cuddling with Einstein:

It must be Sukie's personality to cuddle with other cats. I still sometimes think Pepper wouldn't mind cuddling with another cat, but she'd have to
find the right one. They never quite cuddled together, but she used to go up and hang out on the lookout with Hermes until the day he was spooked by the Roomba
and jumped on top of her. Ever since then, they've kept their distance from each other (though sometimes they do bump noses and get under my feet together
when I'm in the kitchen.) Sometimes Mel wants to cuddle with Pepper, but Pepper doesn't like Mel since Mel annoys her too much in other situations.
I'll bet Pepper could become best friends with DJ. One thing I've noticed about Hermes is that he never tries to play with Pepper the way he does with Mel. He knows when Mel gets into a playful mood and tries to join in, but what happens is that Mel gets upsets and stops playing. So, even though I say he's goofy and dumb sometimes, he's at least smart enough to know that Pepper doesn't want to play and he leaves her be. For more evidence to my claim that he's dumb... he tried to play with one of Mel's plastic pink balls this morning. Only instead of batting it around and chasing it like she does, he grabbed it in his front paws and kicked at it with his back paws. Eventually, he sent it flying across the floor, and that spooked him so badly he tore upstairs and I heard him cry a few times. No wonder he was starving when he was a stray. He was probably too scared of mice and birds to actually stalk and kill them. |

He is very twitchy. Like this morning, I was resting on the sofa, and when I got up, he was spooked by the sudden movement of my legs.
I was resting with Caramel on the sofa, and Pepper looked all excited to come up. I thought it would be one of the greatest moments of my life, but when she came up, Caramel was mean to her and tried batting at her. I tried stopping Caramel, but then they both ran off. Sigh. I was sick yesterday for about an hour after work -- I had some digestive weirdness -- and I lied down and took a short nap. Man, I must have really been out of it because I know some kitties were cuddling with me, but I don't remember which ones. I think whichever one it was was really pushed close, though. Man, I must have really been out of it because I know some kitties were cuddling with me, but I don't remember which ones. I think whichever one it was was really pushed close, though. It was Pepper. She continued to sleep on the microfiber blanket for several hours after that. So, I visited the shelter again. Man...Baby seemed like she was almost about to come out of the cage... but then she ate some of her food and went right back into the litterbox. On the other hand, they had Lady out of the cage and she was once again resting on the cat tree in the sun room. She let me pet her and she really warmed up to me. She rolled over, she purred, and she stood up and pushed her head into my hand, like Pepper sometimes does. When she stood up... Wow. She's huge. Bigger than Hermes. She can barely meow. Most of the times, she opens her mouth and only a breath of air comes out. If she keeps trying, she might eventually get out an "Eh...". I didn't realize Lady was declawed (completely, like Pepper), and when I scratched her cheeks, I noticed huge blob-like tangles. I asked if they had a comb I could borrow, and one of the workers found one. Lady actually let me comb all her tangles out. She seemed to enjoy it. She purred the whole time. Well, except at the very end, she might have been getting annoyed because she started making a caterwauling sound. But I had most of the tangles (and all of the really big ones) out by then. Baby is also completely declawed and has those cheek tangles, too, but she wouldn't let me comb her. She smacked at the comb. That cat has a mean right hook. I saw the Maine Coon again. He's (? I'm not sure if it's male or femal) a lighter gray than Dufie and he's even bigger than Lady. Geez, that's like adopting a lynx. I thought there were people filling out paperwork for his preadoption on the weekend, and I asked today about it, but the worker who was there didn't seem to know. In any case, he's still in the sick room anyway. He seems friendly, though. He strutted around his cage when he saw me, but you're not allowed to touch animals in the sick room, so I couldn't pet him. I dunno. Baby is pretty and it seems possible that she could still warm up to me yet, but I'm leaning a little more towards Lady right now... if only I think it could be possible to keep her on her own food... I just don't know about that. |

That Maine Coon's probably a male. Maine Coons are either the largest or the second largest cat breed (I don't remember what the first would be,
Ragdoll?) and the males in particular are huge.

I've noticed that Lady's face is rather flat. It's not quite as flat as a Persian's, but it's flatter than any other cat I've seen. I
wonder if she's part Persian and part some larger cat, like Himalayan, Ragdoll, or Maine Coon.
I've posted this picture of Lady before, but not in this topic, so here it is again:
Just like with Pepper, when I combed her tangles out, she had less of a "beard" afterwards. I think she was happy to have them taken off, though. The first few times I went to the shelter, Lady was always sleeping in a huge ball and I never saw her face. She's exactly 9 years old this month. (Unlike many cats at the shelter, they know her birthdate.) So, she's not exactly a spring chicken anymore, but she could also have at least another 10 years left on her. I think both Mel and Hermes must have Norwegian Forest Cat ancestry. Baby's shelter picture is terrible:
She looks a LOT prettier than that in person. In that picture, she looks like something another cat coughed up. But at least you can see what I mean by her eyes always being slitted. They don't ever dilate more than that. This was Hermes's shelter picture:
And Pepper's...
Uh yeah... I think they were trying to keep her injury from being visible, but it wasn't a very flattering picture. |

Hermes' picture is cute, though. He looks so proud of himself, looking up diagonally like that. And his eyes do often glow green when they reflect like.
That's probably the single worst picture of Pepper ever. It barely even looks like her. "Of the three ways in which men think that they acquire a knowledge of things--authority, reasoning, and experience--only the last is effective and able to bring peace to the intellect." -Roger Bacon |

Yeah, his picture is okay and so is Lady's. But some of the others they take there... I don't know what happens, but the cats don't look anywhere
near as bad in person as they sometimes do on the website...
This just does not scream, "Adopt me!" On the other hand, some of the cats at other adoption places, like Petco, often do look that bad in person. I don't know what the difference is. I think it's possible now that the Maine Coon they have is the biggest cat I've seen in person. Before that, it was Callie, a HUGE calico they used to have. I think someone there once said that Callie definitely was part Himalayan. |

I dunno. Baby is pretty and it seems possible that she could still warm up to me yet, but I'm leaning a little more towards Lady right now... if only I think it could be possible to keep her on her own food... I just don't know about that. This wouldn't be a problem if I changed my cats over to scheduled feedings rather than keeping the bowl full at all times, which I might consider doing even if I don't adopt another cat. Mel has developed a belly, but I'm not sure right now if it's because she eats too much or if it's from the roundworms (I read that roundworms can cause a "potbellied" appearance). She's also not quite as active as she used to be, though I predict she'll get a lot of exercise exploring the new house. Pepper practically is on a (self-imposed) scheduled feeding, because she rarely eats the dry food and has to wait for her morning and evening wet food. I did notice her take a few bites of the dry food yesterday, but not that much. I deal with her hairball problems with a combination of combing out her loose fur and giving her hairball control formula cat treats. The only problem is figuring out how much to feed them in one day... there are probably online suggestions for that... |

Shelter Kitty progress topic:
Baby - Ah, geez. I just don't know if it's a good idea to adopt her. They took her out of the cage and put her in the playroom on the large cat tree. She acted like she was terrified. She was crying and actually trembling. Her eyes bugged out when she was being carried (almost looked like an alien cat). She hissed and swatted at me almost the entire time, and cowered with her face behind the cat tree's post. I left her alone for awhile and came back to her, and she started meowing at me, came forward, and settled down and purred. I started scratching her cheeks and she purred louder. I got the comb and actually managed to comb out her cheek tangles (just like I did for Lady yesterday). She really seemed to enjoy that. When I hooked a tangle with it, she would pull her head up and make a grunting noise like she really wanted it removed. When I got them all out, she continued to purr a little...and then eventually she hissed and swatted me again. I don't know. Maybe that's progress, but she's much more temperamental than any of our current cats and I just don't think she'd be a good fit. Lady - Still a sun room lump. I think Lady would be content to sleep for the rest of her life. Maybe her and Pepper could become best friends. You know, she always sneezes, and I always joke that she's allergic to herself (she probably is), but what if one of our cats was allergic to her, too? Bailey - She was roaming free today!! She wasn't being as bad as she was the day Crawl let her out, but she was still hissing at other cats. There was a tabby kitten running around, and she hissed at it and chased it. Something about Bailey reminds me of Minnie. She's adorable and lovable, but she thinks of herself as "The Queen" and doesn't like other cats in her territory (I noticed her scowling at the Maine Coon). I think that Minnie and Mel would have a difficult time getting along, and therefore I think Bailey and Mel would have a hard time getting along, too. I used that tabby kitten for a guinea pig. I showed it to Lady to see what Lady thinks of other cats. Lady attempted a meow, nothing came out, and she rolled back over and went back to sleep. I showed the kitten to Baby and...holy crap! The kitten started hissing!! Baby hissed, too, but only after the kitten hissed so I can't say for sure if she would have hissed anyway or if she only did that because she was provoked. Maybe the kitten could somehow sense that Baby is a temperamental cat. The Maine Coon is a female. It's now out in the front area, so I was able to pet her. She's mostly very light silver with a tiny bit of orange in her. I thought some people were signing preadoption paperwork for her over the weekend, but I may have been wrong about that. Once again, the workers didn't seem to know anything about that when I asked. I'm not sure what it's like in personality. It let me pet it, but I didn't try to take it out of the cage and I don't know what it thinks of other cats. I'm not exactly biting my nails in anticipation of adopting it, anyway, because I'm sure by the time I'm ready, it will be long gone. It seems like the best ideas for adopting another cat would be either... 1. A cat that doesn't give a crap about other cats and just does its own thing (ie, Lady). 2. A cat or kitten that is really playful and wouldn't mind playing with Mel and/or Hermes. But I think anything that's temperamental and/or doesn't like other cats would be a problem. |

Hermes does something I can't quite figure out yet. He sometimes follows me when I go up or downstairs. And he's usually friendly with me. But when
I'm upstairs and turn the lights off to go back down, he sometimes "salad tongs" my legs with his front paws, and sometimes even nips my legs. I
don't know if that's because he thinks turning the lights off means it's time to play a game, or if he's admonishing me for turning off the
lights or what.
