She was even rampaging! I'm a lot happier that she's out now, too. She's joining the family.

We finally got the polydactyls to the vet for their nail trimmings. They howled all the way there, but once there they were well behaved. The vets flipped
them over and trimmed all their claws in just a couple of minutes. Neither cat struggled or even moved much. The only thing that slowed them down at all was
that it was difficult for them to get at one of Caramel's "extra" claws that was kind of down in a dew claw.
They fought against being put in the cages at home, but went right back in them immediately when they were done at the vet. And Hermes pooped in his carrier on the way back home. :( At least now they shouldn't be able to hurt each other for a while. Mel still has a little scratch on her nose from a previous run in. |

Oh, and it was not expensive. Just about $16 for the two of them.

Our cats tend to poo in the cat carrier, and I once had Arlene on a leash while sitting in the car while my mom paid for the vet visit, and she peed on my lap.

Hermes was depressed for awhile after we brought them back home, but while I was doing laundry in the basement, he found a catnip banana and played with it. He
also played with a small cardboard roll.
When the vet picked up Caramel, she stiffened and looked like a statue or stuffed cat. |

Actually, I think the best comparison to what she looked like was a pinata. She must've been terrified, but it was hard not to laugh a little at it, too. It was a good thing she went. Some of her claws were so overgrown they were curving around and growing back into her skin. The double-claw on her left thumb was so overgrown that they had criss-crossed. The vet said she can't retract that claw - just like Nucleo, I guess. The vets weighed both of them and Hermes did lose about a pound from the last time he was weighed. I guess the reason he didn't lose more, even though he looks thinner now, is because some of his fat must have converted to muscle. In other news, Lady has a new favorite sleeping spot - the two cat trees that are near the dining room window. She particularly likes the ring that's in the middle (the lower ring on the tree that has two of them.) She gets into the front windows on a regular basis now. She's still a little grumpy towards the other cats, but a great improvement over what she was like just a month ago. One thing about Lady is that she is grouchy and growls a lot, but she's all talk. I've yet to see her physically attack another cat. Lady was rampaging earlier and she jumped onto the lookout by the living room window. I don't know how a cat that big can launch herself into the air like she did, but she did it. Mel doesn't often eat table scraps, but she likes Boston Market chicken. I gave her and Pepper some tonight. Lady begged for it, but didn't actually eat it when I gave her some. Hermes came along and ate what I had put down for her. |

The way FO told the vet story in real life was funny. She said Mel was hiding behind some stuff on the counter and looking at Hermes when he was being
trimmed. FO said she must have been thinking, "Oh, no! I don't know what they're doing to him, but when they're done, I'm next!"
Hermes still tries to scratch the sisal rope, but it seems like he doesn't get quite the grip when he hooks in as he used to. |

Heh. This morning, Mel was scratching at her big tower, but she didn't get much traction at all. It's kind of like when Lady paws at stuff.
Speaking of which, FO thinks that when Lady paws at the door, it's her way of asking to be let out. Oh, poor Caramel! She came running up the basement stairs into the dining room doing her little Mel squeak telling the world how happy she was. She found a
little rope in the basement and brought it up. But after she played with it for a few minutes I took it away because I hear playing with things like that can
be dangerous for cats.

It might not be obvious, but Lady is in the ring there, and Hermes is right behind her in the window. He's the one opening the blinds, and his tail is hanging down. Earlier, Lady was woofing at him for being so close, but it was a rather half-hearted woofing. She seemed like she too tired to do more. And then he was staring at her for a while, but didn't do anything. Maybe they'll learn to get along and share. I'm getting the feeling that Hermes likes Lady. |

It's really a shame they've gotten into fights here because they met at the shelter and got along fine. She was sleeping on a chair and woke up and
started walking around on the floor. I had let Hermes out of his cage and he walked up behind her and sniffed her butt. She turned and looked at him, and
walked off. None of the grumbling and woofing that she's done since she moved in here. But my guess is that they didn't remember each other.

Pepper slept with us last night!
FO's been working late lately, and I thought we should go out for dinner last night rather than make something. After we got back, I went to the couch and Pepper got really excited and ran over to it. She doesn't just like to cuddle on us now; she anticipates it. After she got on me, I conked out. Later I got up and checked the internet and made a few posts. Pepper came over and sat on the printer. It seemed like she wanted to be with me, but I was about to go upstairs to bed. I picked her up, carried her upstairs, and plopped her into bed. I had to brush my teeth, so I did that. By then Pepper had gotten out of bed, so I picked her up and carried her back into the bedroom. FO told me that if Pepper didn't want to be in the bed I shouldn't force her to be, but I said I'd give it one more chance, and she might have left last time because I wasn't in bed, too. So I gave it one more try. When I petted her in bed, she purred very loudly. And she stayed there until morning. FO took her downstairs to give her her breakfast. I hadn't gotten up yet. After that, Pepper walked across me and got back in bed! She must have gone back upstairs on her own, and then went up the little kitty-staircase by the bed on her own. And she only would have done that if she really enjoyed being in the bed earlier. |

I didn't know where Hermes was before I left for work this morning. I hope he's okay. He might not have been upstairs because Pepper was still in bed
there. I wonder if he got into the back laundry room. I checked there, but he could have been hiding.

He has a new hiding spot and I'm not sure where it is. One night I couldn't find him anywhere and assumed he was in the laundry room. I went looking
for him in there, couldn't find him, and turned around and he came running in, so he must not have been in there to begin with, but I don't know where
he came from.
Even though I sometimes have second thoughts on adopting him, I think if we didn't have him, Mel would terrorize Pepper and Lady too much. Mel still likes to hide in the shadows and go charging at Pepper and Lady sometimes. She doesn't hurt them (usually she runs right by them or stops short and turns around), but it does take them by surprise and annoy them. But when Hermes sees her doing that and starts watching her, she stops because she doesn't want to play with him. I was a little worried when Pepper was going upstairs with him up there because he does act a little territorial about the upstairs, and she's only half his size and has no claws, but then again, it seems she knows how to handle him. And he might not mind her as much as Lady, who barks and growls at him constantly, and Mel, who always tries to smack him in the face. Pepper worries me sometimes. I was sitting on the futon to eat dinner last night and sat the plate down for 1 second and she stole a big piece of turkey off of it - I wouldn't mind, except it was still hot. I hope she didn't burn her tongue or anything else. |

I fell asleep on the futon downstairs last night and when I woke up later, I had all three female kitties near me. Pepper was on the lookout near the futon,
Mel was in the bed on the same lookout, and Lady was asleep on a blanket on the floor near the futon. I think at some point, Hermes tried to get close, too,
but Lady lion-roared him away.

Lady finally cuddled with one of us! She jumped up on the sofa with FO!! Then Pepper cuddled, too. They're both still there.

Right now, there are two calicos on the same futon - Lady is snuggled in the microfiber blanket and Mel is on the back of the futon, looking out the window.
Also, earlier today, Mel jumped up on the computer desk while I was still working on the RGB episode review:
She snorted up a snorty storm almost the whole time. |

It's funny how the cats would rather snuggle with us than members of their own species, and how they sometimes get possessive of us. A few days ago, Mel
was on my left leg (I was sitting up, so she couldn't climb on me completely), which left room for Pepper on my right. But when Pepper got on my right
leg, she punched out at Caramel.
FO thinks that Hermes often wants to cuddle with me, but for some reason he thinks he can't do it until we're in bed. This morning, after FO got up, Hermes crawled up on my back (he usually sleeps by my feet) and stuck his face into the back of my head. He was like that until I got up.
