This is totally him. In the last incarnation of nsider, all he did was create these forum games with like 4 pages of rules, and go nuts on people and boot them from the game if they violated a single one. "I am sorry, you stated you'd like to add five stars to the board, but according to rule 4, section A, paragraph 4, sentence 2, you may only add up to three stars per turn. Therefore, in accordance with rule 8, Section B, paragraph 7, sentence 4, you will be removed from the game. In addition, you will also be given a temporary ban from starting any new games that I create, unless you send me a chicken and your password. Thank you for playing"

Devilrays used to do stuff like that at the Game Pond, too. And no matter how many different quiz games with different rules he came up with, people lost interest in them because they knew he'd hit them with some obscure sports trivia that they couldn't answer. The last time I can remember Devilrays posting at the Game Pond before 9/11 happened was when he landed himself in hot water because he went to some other board where some person was able to answer the sports questions, and he specifically created a topic at the Game Pond to tell everyone that that person was a "genius". It ruffled a few feathers, and I don't really think D-rays meant to imply that the Game Pond members were stupid in comparison (though his post unintentionally carried that tone), but he was just that darn clueless.

It reminded me of this one time a co-worker at an old job of mine said her ex-husband sent their son a bunch of photographs of himself and his step-daughter on vacation. She called him and yelled at him, "How could you do something so heartless!? You never go anywhere with your son!" I don't think he intentionally meant to hurt his son's feelings, but he was extremely clueless (in much the same way my parents could be clueless about certain things.)

What reminded me of this was that I was reading through some of the game ideas Junus recently archived at DHN from Devilrays and I noticed that even in some of his goofy game ideas, he got really obsessive about describing all the "rules" of the game. I mean, is that really necessary for something that not only has little chance of becoming reality, but wasn't even intended to be plausible? The idea of non-serious, goofy game ideas is to be entertaining.

Another thing I remember, too, is that as obsessed as he was with creating rules for people to follow, he never paid attention to anyone else's. When Sethra hosted the Game Pond's second "Name Game", she asked that people not try to guess who each other is ahead of the deadline. So, the first thing he does is reply to about 3 different people by ending his posts with, ".... or should I say, FLYING OMELETTE!?"
