That's a good question. I don't have a lot of experience with them, but when I think of a beat 'em up, I think of being trapped in a room or on a screen and forced to fight multiple nearly identical "stupid" enemies with a simplistic combat system in order to advance to the next screen or area. As the game progresses, the enemies may have more health or be stronger, but will retain the same basic attacks and appearance, and only very rarely are completely new types introduced (aside from bosses).

Keep in mind that I didn't get very far, but God of War seemed to have smarter and more dangerous enemies, more platforming, varied puzzles (as opposed to throwing a hat at a gong in various ways), and more intelligent level design than sealing off small parts of the level for you to fight in.
