I thought I should probably explain a little more about how Folklore works.

The netherworld that I've seen so far as the appearance of a massive outdoor area, but if you check the map screen, you see that it's an illusion and that the game follows a basic dungeon style floorplan. There's still a lot of exploring to do, as some "rooms" have multiple exits, and it can get a little confusing due to the lack of good landmarks.

Combat sees you using all four face buttons, as you can assign a particular attack to any of them. As I said, when you defeat a new enemy for the first time, you can absorb it's soul and learn it's attack. So it's a Pokemon style collect-a-thon in a lot of ways. You have way more attacks than you'll ever have any use for, and the only reason to switch to some of them at all is if it's required for a boss or puzzle. The menu system keeps all the critters sorted by attack type or by area you found them, depending on what you like.

When you press the button to do an attack, rather than your character doing it him or herself, the monster the attack belongs to actually appears in front of you to carry it out. It's novel, but feels a little awkward in practice at times.

When you leave the netherworld and go back to the real town, gameplay consists mostly of talking to a particular person to get a particular item that'll let you into a new part of the netherworld. You get more of the story by playing as both characters, but I'm usually so worn out from doing everything twice, that learning a new tidbit or two seems kind of not worth it.

The male character can do a sort of transformation to increase attack power, and the girl can wear different capes for stat bonuses.

It's been a really long time. I seem to remember liking it, but I think I used a guide for several parts because I was annoyed with wandering around trying to figure out where to go next. I think of the whole series, I've only ever completed DW1 and DW2, so maybe that says something about it.

Even though I've deleted them from every place they were posted, I still have my older, almost unreadable reviews. I mention how the random encounters were more annoying than in DW1. I said that because there were more enemies per battle, they seemed to really drag on, even with allies. I complained about the nonlinearity of parts of the game and the vagueness of the hints. I wonder if I might be able to solve the game more easily now that I'm older, though. I was apparently impressed by the longer story and larger world, but wasn't as fond of the soundtrack (I admitted even then that my fondness for DW1's music probably came from it being my first RPG).

Oh, and my laptop updated / restarted again

I have mine set to download updates automatically, but not install them until I want it to. Prevents the unexpected restarts.
