You just need to press the "mode" button to make the d-pad rather than the stick the controller. (I wonder if for a game like Zanac if it could be advantageous to use the stick, though.) Same thing with GENS. Man, the Genesis ROM collection I have sucks. I copied it all over from FO's PC, so it's just a couple of games she reviewed (Insector X, NBA Jam, etc) I need to get some Thunder Force over here. ZSNES, on the other hand, seems to automatically let you use either direction input even in default mode.

Have you tried configuring the controls within the emulators, already? If that doesn't work, on mine, I think there's a button on the front that switches it from analog mode to d-pad. Yeah, I got over the pay-to-unlock-stuff issue. I cleared the Splash Woman and Galaxy Man stages. I had read in EGM or somewhere that Splash Woman made for a good starting stage since she's weak to the Mega Buster. I'm not really sure. The stage itself isn't exactly a walk in the park, nor does the buster make her a super easy boss. So far, I think Galaxy Man is better to get the feel of the game with. The stage has it's dangers, but it's a lot more fun to play. It's got nifty stuff like a robot that comes from above, and tries to carry Mega Man into dangerous stuff at high speed, and little warp zones that you jump into to be shot out of other warp zones. Hard to explain, just look at the video if you're curious. Galaxy Man is also a total wimp. I didn't want to spoil myself with the boss order, so I took a guess and I was wrong. But beating him with the Mega Buster was child's play. If I practiced a little more, I could easily defeat him without taking a hit. There's too many Mega Man games for me to really remember them that well, so I'm not going to be able to say how this one compares to the others, or know when it does something that's original or just ripped from an earlier entry. I will say that it's cool to play a "new" NES game. A game that's challenging enough to be exciting and has music that you'll remember after you turn off the game. PS- Forgot to mention the nifty Dr. L logo outside the boss rooms, since you're fighting Light's robots this time. Anyway, I've got 7 Jiggies, 52 notes, and I unlocked Treasure Trove Cove. Actually though, there's an ebay auction I'm looking at for Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie. So far, the price is right. Posts: 215 (11/15/08 9:47 PM) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I began playing B.O.B. from the SNES about four days ago, and I'll shamefully admit in cartridge format I could only make it past the first password, if that, but now I'm about halfway through the third world (which is the final world, if the scant information on the game is true). Ironically, I didn't even know the game had worlds when I played it years ago - or bosses, for that matter! The level I'm currently on has plenty of paths that loop around to earlier ones, absurd amounts of damage dealt by projectiles, and very little in the way of distinguishing features that make it difficult to tell if I'm actually treading new territory or not. Not that that's anything new the game, though. I definitely wouldn't have made it this far if it weren't for savestates, thank you so much whoever thought losing all your tools that are essential to completing each stage was a good idea.

I can understand why Nintendo Power didn't want to say how to beat Matic, because it's mostly a trick. It's not very intuitive, either (If you're doing it right, then Matic won't attack you for some reason) If you just bought the game as a loose cartridge, you might not have any idea how to do something important, too. I sort of read about it in an old issue of Game Players, although they didn't give any the details.

I don't have enough notes to get past it yet (or at least not the last time I checked). I cleared out Mad Monster Mansion! Notes, Jiggys, and honeycombs. One of the last things I had to do was get the pumpkin to the second floor. I did the general trick with Banjo before doing it with the pumpkin. The other thing, which was kind of stupid, was that I didn't get in the big windows on the 3rd floor of the mansion. It looked like there was no sill, so I thought I'd need to find a flight pad, which doesn't exist in the exterior of that world. Anyway, I gave it another shot, and it turns out there was a sill there, so I was able to jump and break the windows. I think I have more left to in Rusty Bucket Bay than Click Clock Woods. This game makes you do a lot more than Super Mario 64. In SM64, how many stars does it take to beat the game? 60, I think? And you don't need to get ANY 100 coin stars to beat the game, probably. But this game divides up notes and jiggies, so you need to get a lot of both, and you need to get a vast majority of those items. I think the last note door is 810 notes, and there are 9 worlds, so you need an average of 90% of the notes in the worlds. (Since I have 100% in 7 of the worlds, I guess I only need 55% in the remaining two) There are also fewer stages in Banjo, though I'm not sure if that makes a difference. The stages might be larger.

I have over 64 notes in both of the last two worlds, so I unlocked the last door. I had 17 jiggies, so I thought that would be enough to unlock the last painting. The other ones were 4x4, so 16 would unlock any of them (and I think even Click Clock Woods had one piece in place, so 15 was the real maximum). However, the last painting is 5x5, so I need 8 more to fully unlock it. So, this goes back to what I said earlier about how you need to finish more of this game to beat it as compared to Super Mario 64, and how you need at least 90% of the notes. You need ninety-four jiggies to unlock the final boss fight. So, (assuming there's 100 total) you're allowed to miss only 6. Right now, I think I'm missing 5 in Rusty Bucket Bay, 7 in Click Clock Woods, and 2 in Grunty's lair. Oh, I also got the Gold Feathers Cheato Cheat.

It's kind of amazing that this is basically the 2nd 3D platform game ever; visually, it is very polished and detailed. It's a big step up over Super Mario 64. I still think this game really has nothing to do with 2D platformers - ie., it's not an "evolution" or something that made 2D platformers obsolete. That's about as true as RPGs being an evolution that made sidescrollers obsolete. I still think that Super Mario 64 could have had a net negative effect on videogames, but maybe it's not really these individual games' faults. If history had said that games like this could have co-existed with older types of games, I probably wouldn't have judged them so harshly. On their own terms, like I said, they could be decent games. The camera still is imperfect. I guess the proper attitude to have is, "Ah, well, the camera goofed up; it happens" rather than, "This is not a problem that exists in 2D games." If you think the latter way, every time you can't adjust the camera or something obscures your character or you end up running into the screen, or you can't adjust a narrow platform to lay perpedicular with respect to the screen, you'll just be more and more annoyed. If you're patient, you'll realize that even though the camera is imperfect, you can still live with it. One feeling I get when playing this game, especially the later levels, is, "I can't believe how big this is. I'll probably never get everything here, at least not in one life." Then you go through the level bit by bit, finding more and more, and finally clear it out. There's some satisfaction in that. It does seem like this sort of camera system lends itself to adventure gaming more than action. That is part of both why you can live with the camera despite its flaws, and why the games don't have much, in my opinion, with classic action sidescrollers. Grunty is maybe a likable villian. It's sort of funny how she suggests wearing Kazooie in a backpack on her back. Other times, she flatters Banjo and trash-talks Kazooie.

My character, Olaph, is level 19. He just turned 11, and with it gained a few ability points. I'm planning on making him combat-heavy with an interest in fishing, cooking, herb-picking, and potion-making. I'm hoping I'm not spreading myself too thin, but so far I'm doing pretty well. I'm going to get all the basic spells (fire, ice, lighting, and healing) and possibly party-healing, but I won't worry about it too much until I (possibly) rebirth.

Oh boy...I'm almost wondering if this game is even worse than Heroes of the Lance. The entire game (and I'm not making this up) is jumping onto background objects to find items to give to a historical person. And by jumping, I mean, leaping into the air and landing hard on your ass (not making this up). You are given clues as to where the items are hidden, but sometimes the clues are very vague. I got one that said something lik, "Check the first fence". Uh. There are a million fences. Which one is the "first"? Then I got that same clue in the second world and that world doesn't even have any fences. Great. I ended up going to a FAQ for the last item in the first world (which was the fence one), and I could've sworn I even checked that fence before and it didn't turn up. In both Worlds 1 and 2 there were a total of four items, but in each case only the last one was the one I needed to give to the historical person. I wonder if that was coincidence or if this is going to always be the case - the fourth one you find will always be the one you need. Between worlds there's a really asinine sequence of the telephone booth going through the time corridors that you pretty much just sit back and watch for several minutes. Everything about this game reeks of being made by people who don't know anything about videogames. If the idea is that the historical figures have been relocated in time and you have to rescue them, then why not - you know - actually RESCUE them... Running around looking for items in a huge flat sprawling field and then having the character pop up in a room when you've got the right item is not my idea of a rescue. How about... some real puzzles? Mazes? Bosses? Level design of any kind at all? No, let's just make a game where you find hidden things by slamming your ass into rocks, trees, bushes, cacti, and fences. And make sure you make the worlds really big and put about a million rocks, trees, bushes, cacti, and fences in them to keep the players ass-slamming for hours. The music stinks, too. Aren't Bill & Ted supposed to be in a rock band? So why is the music dinky circus music again? The only good things I can say about the game is that the isometric and digitized graphics are okay (although the screen-scrolling is a little herky-jerky), and the dialogue is sometimes amusing. Oh my God, they found Tom.

The first four stages, and their bosses, act as a warm-up if you like. The challenge picks up considerably from level 5. The infamous section 6-2 was not as bad as I thought it might have been. The restart points in the latter levels might have posed a problem but I was patient with the game. It helps to really know your special weapons. Oh, and I never ran out of time - no way were the time limits strict. Not too hot at games, and not much better at writing reviews!

I think Acclaim must have made it a point to hire the most sadistic and/or least competent game programmers in the world. And didn't Nintendo Power make a huge fuss over the Bill & Ted game? Wasn't there even a NESter's Adventures comic based on it?

They gave it featured coverage, but I don't remember how they rated it. Wasn't there even a NESter's Adventures comic based on it? Yes. I believe the tip had something to do with jumping into the bushes to avoid enemies. That particular comic was incomprehensible to me when I read it because I hadn't seen the Bill & Ted movie nor played the game, so I had no idea what was going on. Well, I slammed my ass through about 4 more levels last night, but I keep getting stuck on the Modern World. I beat it once, but then the game makes you do it twice! (It also made me do the Medieval World twice.) On the second try, I had the Money Bag (which I'm pretty sure is what Robin Hood wants), but I couldn't find him anywhere. There are just too many enemies on this stage that throw you in jail and not enough items to deal with them. That's another type of game design I'm not too fond of which I'll dub Sitting Duck Design: When your character has no default attacks and must rely on finding or receiving expendable items.
