I set up food and water dishes for Hermes upstairs the same way I did with Pepper. I think Mel and Pep are going to have difficulty sharing their eating space with him for awhile, so I'll try to "train" him to eat up there.

Hermes went to sleep at the top of the stairs. Mel is playing with a ball and Pepper is ripping paper to shreds. It's funny how they go right back to being
themselves once they think the big bad lion is gone.

I set up food and water dishes for Hermes upstairs the same way I did with Pepper. I think Mel and Pep are going to have difficulty sharing their eating space with him for awhile, so I'll try to "train" him to eat up there.Oh, for crying out loud!! First Pepper and then Mel went upstairs and ate out of his food dish! And Pepper hasn't even been in that room in months! And after all that time I had a dish of food up there for Pepper and neither of them would touch it! Mel is being more confrontational with Hermes than she was with Pepper. When we first brought Pepper home, she hid all the time and would go WAY out of her way to avoid crossing paths with her. Mel is going right up to Hermes a lot and walking past him, although she does hiss and growl the whole time. It could be that being with Pepper has made her more used to being around other cats, so she feels a bit more confident. |

She might be going up to Hermes more than Pepper, but she's in a MUCH better mood. When Pepper was new, Caramel was very moody, and even grouchy around
us.

You wouldn't know if it you weren't familiar with Pepper's moods, but she is worked up. She looks like she might even be happy. She usually sleeps constantly, but she's been about more, and even when she lies down, she's not quite as conked out as usual. |

Hermes is being friendly with me. He lets me pet him, especially liking it around his jaw, and without nipping.
But of course the cats don't get along with each other. Mel was gonna be mean. She wanted to smack Hermes in the face, but he barked at her and she ran off in terror. |

Pepper already does this, so I guess Hermes can, too. Going after Caramel's wet food left overs.

Hermes is being friendly with me. He lets me pet him, especially liking it around his jaw, and without nipping. He hasn't been nippy at all since I brought him home. I think he just really hated the shelter environment.
But of course the cats don't get along with each other. Mel was gonna be mean. She wanted to smack Hermes in the face, but he barked at her and she ran off in terror. I just hope we don't end up having to return Hermes because Mel can't learn to accept him, but it's only the first night. One of the problems with teaching Mel to leave Pepper alone when Pepper wants to be left alone is that Mel doesn't take Pepper's growls and hisses seriously. But Hermes's bark was so loud, it startled her. I think he's definitely been an indoor cat. He got really excited when he saw me opening the refrigerator, and he acted for several minutes like he expected to get something from it (walking in circles, meowing softly, rubbing his face on things). Since I have no idea what his former owners gave him, I didn't know what to do. I gave him three Pounce, but that didn't really stop him. I figured I might just have to let him "get over it", and eventually he did. |

Sometimes, I feel like I'm very in-tune with Mel's emotions. When she's happy, it makes me feel really happy. The past couple of days I was
wrapping piles of coins into coin wrappers, and she was extremely fascinated with the whole process. She kept walking around me, rubbing against me and
purring, sitting down and watching, pawing at the coin piles, playing with the empty wrappers, and generally being really good and loving.
But now that she's upset about this intruder cat in the house, I feel guilty for making her feel that way. For some reason, I didn't feel quite as bad about her reaction to Pepper (maybe because Pepper also came to our doorstep and because Pepper, being smaller and declawed, is not much of a potential threat to Mel). If Mel never showed much interest in playing with other cats, I never would have considered a third one. But lately, she's been harassing Pepper more and more and it's tiresome to get between them all the time. So, I thought getting a cat that's more willing to play with other cats would be a benefit to both of them (since Mel would get a willing playmate and it would take pressure off Pepper). So, yeah, I guess I just have to wait it out and see. Lucky I have all week home. I think if it doesn't work out, though, I won't bother adopting another and we'll just have to look at alternate ways to keep Mel from harassing Pepper (Crawl has suggested a water gun). Right now all three are sleeping within eyesight of each other. Pepper's indifference is kind of amusing. I think that's the reason my emotions aren't quite as attuned to Pepper's - because she's indifferent to so many things, whereas Mel has curiosity about everything. Although, this morning Pepper did investigate the coin wrapping situation, too.. by plopping herself right down where I was counting my coin piles. |

Well, Hermes did nip a couple of times. He seems more aggressive about it. I've pulled my hand away, so he didn't get me, but his teeth audibly click
when he nips.
I think Pepper and Caramel might be brought together in their suspicion of Hermes. |

Things are a little tense between Mel and Hermes, but what can you do?
Compared to Hermes, Mel doesn't look so big anymore. One behavior problem Hermes has is that he wants to scratch the carpeting on the stairs. Mel never had that problem. I did spray the cat furniture with cat nip. Just as I was writing this paragraph, he started scratching the big tower, so maybe there's hope. Some portaits of Pepper
and Mel

One behavior problem Hermes has is that he wants to scratch the carpeting on the stairs. He's got another one - he's scared of the dark. He's been going crazy almost all night. I finally turned on the upstairs hall light and he settled down. It might just be because he's in a strange place and he won't do that after a few days, but if these problems don't correct themselves by the
end of his trial period, he might just have to go back.

If there's one good thing I can say about his behavior so far it's that he's the only one of the three cats that knows how to completely bury his
waste. He's gone twice now, and both times I looked and thought, "Well, I thought he was going, but I
don't see anything." Then I used the scooper and found it.
Mel is completely incompetent at burying hers (instead of getting outside the box and scratching inside, she stays inside the box and scratches everywhere outside of it), and Pepper only half-buries her poops, and not her pee at all. But I've gotta somehow correct his nighttime behavior if it doesn't on its own. Maybe I can try exercising him today to wear him out so that he'll sleep through the night. He doesn't seem as impressed by microfiber as Mel and Pep are. I tried lifting him up and putting him on the futon, thinking the blanket there would calm him down, but he just leaped down. Mel is the only one of the three cats that had a good first night (she slept on the computer chair). I don't think Pepper was feeling well the night we brought her home. She cried out several times in the night and vomited the next morning. I stayed up in the large bedroom with her, and she cuddled with me for a few minutes, but spent the remainder of the night exploring the room. I wonder if Hermes's former owners put him outside at night. |

Mel slept on me last night, so that's normal. |

Hermes is looking at me from the steps. He is cute. I think we're gonna have to take him to the vet, though, because he keeps blinking and squinting his
left eye, and I think it might have a film on it.

I kept telling them that it looked like something was wrong with his eye, but they kept saying they didn't notice anything unusual. |

Just when I think I'm feeling sorry for Mel, she goes and does something that hurts her case. I opened up the blinds downstairs so the cats could look out
the windows more easily. Pepper walked over and got on the small circular house and was looking outside. Mel went over and leaped onto the castle, which is
next to the house. At first, I thought, "Oh cute, they're gonna look out the window together", but no, Mel had to go and smack poor Pepper on the
head. Pepper jumped down and left.
Hermes is so playful. He was playing with the catnip bananas and cigar in the large bedroom and running in and out of the play cubes. I can tell he wants to play with Mel, but they're still too cautious of each other. He walked up to her, let out a "mew", and turned and walked away. Right now, he's sitting on the stairs watching Mel play with a plastic ball.

During the day, Hermes doesn't seem like a bad cat at all. He rubbed his head on the computer and the CD tray popped open. Then he rubbed his head on the
tray. He also likes to scratch the sisal rope, and so far he's the only one of our cats that does.
He does act like he wants something from the kitchen a lot, but if I ignore him long enough, he'll go and eat some of the dry cat food from Mel and Pep's bowl instead. We just have to iron out that problem of rampaging through the house at night if it persists. If all he needs is a night light, I could switch the hallway bulb with a fluorescent bulb. He's being so good, that I'm almost wondering if I could trust him alone with the other cats long enough to go pick up some plastic storage totes from OfficeMax. I need at least two so that I can put away these DVDs that we got from Circuit City. |

Pepper does look like a miniature tiger.
But I couldn't even imagine living with 9 cats like that one shelter volunteer said and that other volunteer blew my mind when she said she had 17. Can you even appreciate each individual cat's personality with that many? I have to confess that I don't pay the same attention to every single cat at the shelter (especially the ones that do nothing but sleep all the time), because there are just too many of them. Well, I knew a family that had 10 cats, and their house wasn't deplorable like the one in that article you linked. However, they also had a large yard and many of their cats were outdoor cats, so they probably did most of their business outdoors. But I've gotta somehow correct his nighttime behavior if it doesn't on its own. Maybe I can try exercising him today to wear him out so that he'll sleep through the night. He doesn't seem as impressed by microfiber as Mel and Pep are. I tried lifting him up and putting him on the futon, thinking the blanket there would calm him down, but he just leaped down.I just hope that ain't the reason his previous owners ditched him in the first place because it might be hard to correct if that's so. Stan, my old big fatty, used to howl at night sometimes, too. I think he wanted to go outside but you can't really let a cat roam around here unless you don't mind running the risk of it being attacked by a stray dog or hit by a car. |
