Like I said earlier, I put "play" paper under Pepper's tower for her to tear. She was tearing it and I thought I'd get a video of it, but
she saw me, stopped playing, and walked up to me. It's still cute, though. You can see things you might not see in a still picture, like how she looks at
us with her big eyes, and how she has that cute little patch of white around the bottom of her mouth and chin.

Pepper and Caramel were playing together tonight. Pepper's been getting more playful lately and I think it's partially because her injury has almost
completely healed. She started by batting a catnip ball around, and when Caramel got curious and approached her, Pepper did a butt-wiggle and pounced after
her. They chased each other around a few times, and Pepper also attacked a small mouse toy and tore up some paper at the base of one of their cat towers. While
Pepper was playing underneath of it, Caramel was climbing all over top of it and would leap down, then Pepper would give chase again.

That was so adorable. We had a roll of paper towls on the floor near Pepper's tower, and she pounced on it. And she pounced on the paper, too. Sheesh,
by now it's a bit of a mess since she's torn off so many little pieces. (We'll eventually have to figure out the Roomba) And they took turns
chasing each other.
I'm so glad they're able to play like that. I love to see Pepper play. She's so cute when she runs, and when she plays with toys she can be really twitchy. And I want them to be friends. Sometimes, they still fight, but I'll break that up. But I think chasing each other around is harmless play. Also, Pepper cuddled with me a lot today. She was on my lap when we watched Speed, though I put her there (but at least she didn't jump off!) And she was sleeping next to me on the sofa for a while just a bit ago. And she really must have done that just because she wanted to be next to me, because she wasn't even on the microfiber blanket. And, yes, her wound looks 100% better. I don't see any raw spots whatsoever. And even a couple of weeks ago there was a small raw spot left.

Sheesh! I'll bet Pepper could turn into Caramel 2! Just now, she was getting herself all worked up on her own, and when Caramel came over, Pepper went
after her! I wonder if Caramel will eventually regret teaching Pepper how to play so aggressively.
Man, did she get into catnip? I've never seen her play like this. (Though I wonder if they have before. Sometimes when we're in bed, I hear the scampering of little kitty feet, and I wondered if Caramel and Pepper were chasing each other [or if Caramel was just running around on her own], but I never saw it)

Bah! I thought I got at least a few seconds of video of Caramel monkeying around on the smaller tower, but the camera's batteries died, and it looks like
it wasn't saved. I got a couple of seconds of what it looks like when Caramel "stalks" Pepper, but they did cuter things tonight.

I slept on the sofa again last night. Caramel slept with FO, but Pepper jumped up beside me and, from that point on (it was in the middle of the night,
though) she slept with me until morning! That's probably the most she's slept with one of us. FO says that Pepper doesn't like it when we roll
around in our sleep, but on the sofa I didn't really have room to move much.

Ebert wrote an essay for his blog about dogs.
I think it was supposed to evoke a lot of different emotions, nostalgia and love foremost, but what I came away from it most strongly with was a sense that his parents were typical Adult Assholes. Not that kids can't be assholes, but there's a particular type of assholishness associated with adults. They got two dogs. The little one was allowed to be in the house; the bigger one, not. They had Wall To Wall Carpeting. So, the dog cried outside. No fucking duh. Then the crying kept the adults up at night. Did they try to keep him inside on some sort of test basis? Maybe confine him to Roger's room at night? No, that would involve caring about other people or things and making compromises, something that Adult Assholes can't do. They got rid of the dog when Roger was away. That bit about Wall to Wall Carpeting reminds me of things other adults I grew up with said. My grandfather was a big nut about the walls. "Don't put your hands on the walls!" Hey, it helps you balance. I can't imagine how many thousands of times you'd have to touch the walls, over a period of decades, to wear away some of the paint. (Especially since it's not like you'd be touching the wall in the exact same spot every time). Do parents or grandparents ever think, "I wonder what the kids will think of me when I'm gone? Will them remember me as a kind, generous person? Or will they just think I'm the person who was obsessed with keeping them from touching the walls?" My mother had her own capitalized expression, which was "My Weekend." We weren't supposed to do anything that would prevent her from enjoying "My Weekend." (I remember her saying this, but I can't remember or even imagine what it could have been said in reference to) The funny thing is, she could have just gone and done whatever, and we could have stayed at home, maybe watching cartoons, and everyone would have been happier. Anyway, the other thing I got from his essay is that he must have had a bad experience with cats. He said they deny you of solitude while not providing you with companionship. They don't give unconditional love. It's okay to have a bad experience with cats, I guess. I had a bad experience with dogs. Granted, a lot of that was due to Adult Assholishness. I "got" a dog, but I didn't chose to, and I didn't get to pick one out. I wasn't allowed to name it what I wanted. The dog was kind of crazy (a bonus you get by not picking it out). And we were told that if they had a baby, the dog would go. So, what was the point of getting it to begin with? Now that I think about it, of all the pets I've had over the years, our cats are the only ones I really bonded with. (My grandparents had a dog I might have kind of bonded with, but I was only 2 years old at the time, so it was a little different.)

Anyway, the other thing I got from his essay is that he must have had a bad experience with cats. He said they deny you of solitude while not providing you with companionship. They don't give unconditional love.Man, that's weird reading that when it DOES seem like Pepper and Caramel give unconditional love. On the other hand, my parents had a dog when I was very young (before Duke) that clearly only cared about the person who fed her the most, which was my dad. She liked him because he always gave her some of his dinner and fed her junk food, like cookies and Hostess/Little Debbie-style snack cakes. But she was mean, rotten, and nasty to everyone else. The weirdest part is that both my mother and my father were completely blind to how nasty she was to other people. I remember walking past the dining room table one time and she came charging out from underneath the tablecloth, barking and snarling at me. She'd often growl at people when they'd walk past her. It was weird hearing other people complain about how they were scared of her because she'd growl at them when they'd visit, while my mother and father just went on and on about what a sweet lovable angel she was. My mother even said that Duke was never as nice of a dog as she was, which is completely mind-blowing, since Duke was the exact opposite. One thing my mother complained about Duke was that when he was a puppy, he chewed part of the door and wall in the pantry room where we kept him. But that seemed rather mild in comparison to the times we'd come home and find the entire house in disarray with stuff chewed up and flung everywhere from Niki (the "sweet lovable angel" dog). One time my mother bought Easter baskets for me and another family member. While we were out, Niki found the baskets, tore the plastic wrap off of mine, and ate all the candy out of it. My parents thought it was "funny" and didn't bother to replace it. So, the other family member got an Easter basket that year and I didn't (and that was rare that they did anything like that - they usually told us they couldn't afford things like that). Niki also destroyed some of my 45 records and childhood books. In short, I hated that dog. |

In happier news, I woke up several times last night and each time I did, Caramel was in the bed, but in a slightly different position and spot than she was
before. One time, she was right between me and Crawl, near our legs. Another time, she was on right next to my pillow, in a crescent shape.
FO says that Pepper doesn't like it when we roll around in our sleep, but on the sofa I didn't really have room to move much.Pepper seems to get easily annoyed by movement in her sleeping area. If you roll over or even adjust your position slightly, she'll get up and leave. Yesterday when I woke up, I had rolled over onto my stomach again and I could feel a cat on my legs, but couldn't tell who it was. Then it started moving and I felt claws, so I knew right away it was Caramel. |

And after you woke up, Caramel crawled up on top of me, even though I was lying on my side and she didn't have much room. She just loves being with us.

I like both cats and dogs. They both have good points and bad points, and when people say they had a "bad experience" with a dog or a cat, it seems
to me like it's usually due to either human stupidity or animal abuse. I had a bad experience with a dog when I was younger (I got too close to the
neighbors' dog, and the the dog wrapped its chain around my leg) but I don't hate dogs for it. I don't even blame the dog for what happened. It was
more my fault than anything else.
All dogs are different, and all cats are different. You can't expect every one of them to be like that one evil dog or cat from your childhood.
I live on the internet.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at. Ebert might have had cats that don't seem to love unconditionally, but that's just his experience.
And I wouldn't say that my experiences with dogs made me dislike them in general. All the same, however, I'd rather have cats than dogs as pets, just because they're easier to care for. |

Yeah, same here. I actually liked Duke (our third dog) a lot more than Bubba (our second cat), but I wouldn't want a dog now and we couldn't have one
in this apartment building anyway.
Note that I don't have much memory of our first cat (a solid white female named Missy) and our first dog (a grey toy poodle named Smokey) anymore. I think Missy was a nice cat, but the only thing I remember about Smokey is that he hid underneath the sofa all the time. |

I have never seen a cat get excited when one of its owners comes home the way Caramel does. I've seen dogs do this, but not cats. All she has to hear is
Crawl opening the mailbox or opening the gate latch, and she starts running wildly back and forth between the large sliding windows and the smaller window,
jumping around, meowing loudly in a way she doesn't meow in any other situation, and even jumping up and pawing rapidly at the door.

She also lap-catted on me for over 40 minutes tonight.
