Here's a new video of Pepper. She was spazzing out with the catnip ball, but by the time I got the camera out she was a bit more sedate. It's still
kind of cute. She is "salad tonging" me with her little paws and trying to pull me into her mouth. Caramel does that all the time, but this is the
first and so far only time Pepper has done that.

Pepper is shaped like a giant kidney bean.
Two days ago, I woke up in the morning and found a purring Pepper face right in my face. Last night I woke up in the middle of the night and felt a cat lying on my legs, but I didn't know which one it was. It turned out to be Caramel, but I had to make her move. She's so heavy that she hurts my legs and hips after awhile. She left the bed to get a snack and use the litterbox, but when she came back, she snuggled up against Crawl's legs in the microfiber blanket and was purring as loudly as possible. |

I was looking through an older thread for a different post, and came across the one where FacilityPro adopted his cats.

Pepper cried last night, and FO got her to follow her back to bed. I think she was lying half on me, half on FO. And Caramel was lying on my other half.
Then Pepper goes crazy licking herself. I couldn't see it, but I guess she was licking the same spot over and over. With great gusto. Loudly and wetly. FO kept telling Pepper to stop and eventually Caramel thought she was playing or something and was trying to play back. |

The one on the left looks like a red patch tabby like Pepper.
Every time Pepper turned her head and started licking, I'd put my hand on her head to make her stop. She didn't appreciate that. She went over to the crate staircase and finished her licking over there (but since it wasn't right next to my head, and it was out of Caramel's line of sight, it didn't bother me as much), and then she left. However, I woke up again later and she was back in bed with us. Caramel did something really hilarious one day when she was desperately trying to get Pepper to play with her. Pepper was sleeping on the broken office chair and Caramel was walking all around it, looking up at her, and putting her front paws on it to get right in Pepper's face. Pepper kept hissing at Caramel as she didn't want to be bothered. Finally, Caramel got in the new cat tower and got in the circle closest to Pepper, rolled over onto her back and started undulating like a big furry worm. For some reason, that bothered Pepper enough to make her get up and leave. |

Pepper is finally listed as "Adopted" on the shelter's website, and someone adopted that giant longhair calico they had there, too.

Caramel has a new thing she does now when I'm using the computer. She stands up tall and hooks her claws into the chair*. Then she pulls herself up to
the top of the chair, behind my head. Then she walks all around me, then goes to the desk and walks all around it.
I told FO that maybe it'd be a good idea to clear off the desk and put another little kitty bed there for Caramel to sit in. FO said she doesn't know if she wants to encourage that behavior from Caramel. But I told her it's probably just that Caramel is lonely and wants more attention, so why not give it to her? *(She did this part before. I used to wonder if she was just scratching, or trying to get our attention. Considering what she does next now, it must have been the latter.) |

Caramel did a lot of things tonight. She was stalking Pepper, and then completely jumped on her. All 4 paws, her body completely covering Pepper's. Then
they started fighting (not a surprising consequence) and I broke it up. FO laughed at it. Maybe it wasn't as serious as it looked. I guess Caramel was
just (again) trying to get her to play.
Then Caramel got on the floor near Pepper, and did that thing she does where she rolled over on her back and undulated. I had an epiphany about why she does that. I think she's purposefully making herself vulnerable in an effort to encourage Pepper to jump on her. I wonder if Caramel thinks it's her job to teach Pepper how to play. Pepper is probably an older cat, but Caramel might think she's younger, since she just "appeared" after Caramel had already lived here a while. Well, even if she doesn't think Pepper is younger, it is obvious that she doesn't play much. I tried rolling and undulating on the floor on my back in front of Caramel to see what she'd do. She looked at me as though she couldn't figure out what I was doing. So, what does she think Pepper thinks? Caramel also briefly got in her house in the tower. It's the first time I saw her do that in weeks. I think she might like that it has a little ledge outside it, so she can be partway in and still rest her head and shoulders outside. None of the other cat furniture interiors (the castles, or the upstairs tower) let her do that. |

I also played a little bit with Pepper with the catnip balls. Not too long, because she gets tired after just a few minutes.
Playing with the ball is kind of like playing catch. She'll attack it, pushing it away in the process (towards me), I roll it back and the cycle continues. A major technique of kitty martial arts must be to grab something with your hands, pull it into your mouth, and then scratch it to hell with your back paws. Both Caramel and Pepper do that. Pepper was trying to do that to the ball, but when she grabs it and has it in her mouth, there's really nothing left for her to kick, so it looks funny to see her try. I think I figured out why Caramel did that thing where she'd wrap her arms around a post or object or something when "attacking" it. (If I haven't posted this before). I think it's so she can keep her face protected while she attacks something. She prefers to have some sort of cover. I don't think I've yet seen Pepper do anything equivalent. |

Another thing about Caramel is that she by now knows what the second laser pointer is. It has a little key chain, so as soon as she hears that rattle when we
pick it up, even before we push the button, she starts getting ready to stalk it.
I think Pepper likes playing with the turbo scatcher chaser more than Caramel does.

Crawl and 1OOO wrote:Nemo does that too. When I'm at the computer on weekend mornings, she sits by the door for hours because, when light shines through the blinds and hits my watch, it makes a reflection on the wall and she goes nuts. She just sits there watching the wall. As for Nemo, she was still a kitten in that pic. (Nemo is the one "kissing" in the pic.) She's bigger than Slippy now. I was just on the phone with my brother, and he said we should be frequently brushing our cat's teeth. So, uh, any tips for that?

How about forget that conversation?
Or buy special dental treats? |

I dunno, dental treats never worked for any of our cats, who all have horrible breath, and I Simba has tooth problems.
They make cat toothbrushes and pastes. Some just look like a human toothbrush but with a smaller head, some go on your finger. I guess just go see what there is. The pastes don't have flouride in them. If the cats weren't taught about the toothbrush as a kitten they may not take kindly to it. |

I'm happy with our two cats, but I think if we ever did move to a bigger place, I'd get a third one. I'd adopt it from the shelter, but I would
want to get one that's playful because I think Caramel would really love a cat that would play with her.

I rotated the big tower 90 degrees last night. I noticed that Caramel likes the medium tower the most now, and I think it might be because it's closer to
us, and because it's eye-level with us when we're at the computer or sitting down. The way her tower was before, the little house looked up the
stairs, which might have been kind of pointless. Now it faces out into the room.
I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but when Caramel saw the rotated tower, she got excited, explored all around it, and took a nap in the second highest level for a while. The 2nd highest level is the biggest "disc" in any of the towers, overall I think, and it also doesn't have a little hole in the bottom. It's possible that the reason she got so excited, though, was just because, by rotating it, the tower looked "new" to her. She wasn't able to crash land out of the tower onto the castle, though. Maybe I'll need to move the castle closer. She climbed down a few levels, then crash landed on the computer chair ... where Pepper was sleeping! But Caramel did that only to get down, and not to harass little Pepper. After she crash landed, she jumped back down to the floor, leaving Pepper looking really confused as to what the hell just went on. |

Oh! Pepper is on the upper level of the smaller tower, and Caramel came up behind her, on the stairs and on the 2nd level, and sniffed her and got close. It
was so cute, and Caramel was even being good, not attacking her or anything. I wonder if she wanted to snuggle with Pepper, but was worried what Pepper would
do.

FO converted another little part of the apartment to a cat spot. She got a plastic kitty tower with hammock-like walls and floors (this)
and put it by the big window. Caramel can get to the top, of course, but I'm not sure what it'll do for Pepper. We put the spare castle by the
window, so she could sit there and look out the window if she wanted. I'm not sure if that'll be the long term solution. I might get something else
for there for her.

She enjoyed it when I first assembled it, but she hasn't really gotten back on it since. To be completely honest, I'm not so certain I'm happy with
it, for several reasons....
It's bigger than I thought it would be. It doesn't leave much room in that area and I have no idea what I'll do when it's time to bring my bicycle back downstairs. I didn't realize those hammock things were hammocks. The box kind of made it look like the platforms were some kind of solid thing. I'm not sure how much Caramel really likes sitting on those hammocks. She doesn't tend to like things that don't feel solid and stable underneath of her. It may not also be very convenient for resting on and looking out the window as it wobbles a lot and the hammocks might not be that comfortable. Since it's bigger than I expected, I don't think Pepper will be able to use it much, and the size of it might be overwhelming to her. I was hoping to open up that portion of the room to her as the clutter over there seemed to deter her from it. If Pepper won't use it anyway, I almost think Caramel was happier with the storage boxes. I could deflate the two play cubes in the small bedroom (they almost never use them anyway), and put away the step-stool, and maybe move it up there, and then get a smaller piece of cat furniture for that area. One of the pet supplies stores has one that would be perfect, but it's expensive. Maybe I'll wait to see if they have a sale... |

What I'd do if I was filthy stinking
rich.
If Pepper won't use it anyway, I almost think Caramel was happier with the storage boxes. I might actually be able to do something a little more cost-efficient and low-tech. If I brought back two or three of the storage boxes, I might be able to situate them in a staircase manner (the same way I made a staircase leading to the bed), and maybe we could get some lower-cost cat beds, scratch pads, and/or one-story houses to put on top of them. It'd be less expensive, we'd have some creative freedom, and we'd be assured that both cats are able to use it. |
