Dufie looks vaguely like Bubba. Not the color pattern, but the length of the fur and the structure of the face.

You might have seen this picture on the Kitchen Sink page of my site, but this was one of her favorite pasttimes - sitting in the sink and watching the birds out the bathroom window:

I've also known people who had cats who put unbreakable generic Christmas balls on the very bottom of the tree so that the cats would play with those instead of leaping up for the breakable ones.

Yup. I was just telling Crawl the other day that we did that for Bubba. I used to have a photograph of her playing with what we called the "onion balls" underneath the tree. That was taken when she was really young and cute and before she turned into the Worst Cat Ever.

If you can't get that kitten back without giving a phone number, maybe you could call in Crawl's brother (or anyone else, I guess) for a favor? Have him go the shelter, say he wants to adopt the cat, then hand it off to you? Or do they have ways of tracking that, like that one woman who got in trouble for giving away a dog she got from Mutts & Moms or something?

We might have to get Crawl's brother's help on this one. I asked his mother today, and she didn't sound too wild about the idea. She told me I "better not" adopt that kitten because it would have enormous medical bills. ??? Assuming it has no chronic problems, why would the upkeep on it be any worse than Caramel's? Yeah, it had a gash in its back, but that should eventually heal and it will be taken care of by the time she'll be ready for adoption.

Caramel hardly looks like the first few photographs we took of her anymore. She's fluffed way out and has these fluffy bits on her cheeks that aren't noticeable in the picture that's on my front page.

I don't know how thick Bubba was, but Dufie's all fur, and you can feel her ribs and spine when you pet her.

That's how Bubba was, too. But we found out many years later that the reason she wasn't gaining weight was because she had an overactive thyroid.
