I have a tendency to lose things, and the most recent thing I lost was the USB controller I got for my laptop. Since I might want to have one, especially on
trips, and since I can't borrow FO's forever, I'll probably need to get a new one. So it won't be redundant with the one I already have, if I
ever find it again, I think I might get one that's like a Dual Shock. Especially since N64 emulation now exists -- I wonder if Goldeneye would work like
that.

I got a dual analogue logitech controller. I tried Goldeneye emulated.
HOLY CRAP IT'S AWESOME!!! It might take me a little while to get used to the analogue (it seems more sensitive than on the N64 -- unless it can be calibrated). BUT.... The graphics look better. The frame rate is higher. It looks better aside from animation, too, though. Texture smoothing, maybe? I did notice, though, that the sky above the bridge has no detail. No fog? The control has a chance to be even better. Imagine being able to aim with the left pad and strafe with the right. I think the dual shock template puts more buttons within reach than the N64 controller (IMHO, if you're using the analogue stick and the buttons, then the digital pad is not accessible) The default shooting button was what I'd call the start button, which is of course unusable, but you can switch it to a shoulder button, which makes it feel like a gun / N64 controller. |

I also saw the TI Nspire when I was out tonight. It looks (according to Wikipedia) that it's just a souped up TI84. So who wants that. Graphing
calculators only earn their worth when they can do algebra. There's a distinct calculator called the TI Nspire CAS which I guess is more comparable to a
TI89. But I'm not sure if it's worth getting if you already have a TI89.

Heh, that's the most enthusiastic I've seen Crawl be about anything game related in a while.

Yeah, it looked to me like either the fog layer was turned off or it's just not emulated at all.
If it can be turned off, I might have done that when I was using Project64 to take screen captures awhile ago. |

That controller works really well with N64 games, but I haven't had much luck with it yet with NES games. By default, they cause it to use the left
analogue stick as the dpad, and obviously I'd prefer for it to use the digital pad.
The nice thing about the N64 emulator is that to configure something as "up" or "c left" or whatever, you select that, then press the button that you want to have that function. I'm not aware of any NES emulators that let you do that. |

Have you tried configuring the controls within the emulators, already? If that doesn't work, on mine, I think there's a button on the front that
switches it from analog mode to d-pad.

Sorry, I misread your post. Give Nestopia a shot.

Yeah, so far I tried FCEU and NESter, so I'll try Nestopia next.
I think it *might* even be possible to somehow configure the controller itself, without regard to the emulator. It came with a miniCD, so maybe that's what that is for. (Otherwise, I don't know why a controller would need software -- obviously, so far we haven't used any) |

I just checked FCEU and it does let me configure the controller just by pressing the buttons. Under Input Configuration, I selected Gamepad for port 1.
Then click configure, click on the button you want to configure (A, B, etc.) then press the button on the keyboard or controller you want to use. If that doesn't work, maybe you should install the software. I think I did. |

It worked with NEStopia.
I couldn't figure out how to do it in FCEU. It says something about holding the button and "bringing the button selection into focus" or something inscrutable. Anyway, it doesn't seem to do anything. |

We went out to a shopping center area for lunch. I had some kung pao chicken and it was really good!
At a Barnes and Nobles I saw a little book that I guess collects Einstein's original work on relativity. I figured, "What the heck" and got it. I guess when I do read something for adults lately, it does have a tendency to be about physics, but at least this might be "fun". I got a toy harmonica, prompting FO to ask if I really needed it. No, but it was cheap and I was curious what it'd be like. It's kind of weird. It seems to me (I didn't test it objectively) that it's in the key of C, but with a weird tuning, like EGCEGCEG ABDFABDF I think it's tremolo tuned (two reeds per note) and every reed has its own hole (so if your mouth is only opened enough for one hole, you won't get both blow and draw notes. And depending on how you center your mouth around two holes, you might get blows and draws that are staggered compared to how I wrote them above) I don't know how that would affect things like bending yet. I'd guess you'd be better off getting a cheap Hohner if you were a parent and wanted to get an inexpensive for a child. |

Today I bought second-hand, cartridge-only for the N64:
G.A.S.P!! Fighters' NEXTream Quake Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue I considered getting another copy of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but I'm glad I got the chance to play Rugrats: Treasure Hunt recently, otherwise I would have bought it. It's easily one of the worst games I've played this year. |

Amazon was having a Black Friday sale and I picked up Wario Land Shake It for $30. It's now back up to $50. I got Heavenly Sword for $20, and it's now
back at $51. I also picked up Persona 3 w/ soundtrack and art book, Symphonia 2, and Star Ocean: First Departure.
Got Diddy Kong Racing, Bad Fur Day, and Perfect Dark recently for N64. That's most of my holiday splurging done. |

I got a Mighty Bomb Jack NES cartridge to replace the one I stupidly gave away as a kid. I traded it for some other game. Solar Jetman, I think, which is even
worse. See I hated Bomb Jack because I could never finish it, but now I want to replay it and finally beat it so that's one less childhood ghost in my
closet.

Bought Glover and Iggy's Reckin Balls (2nd-hand, cartridge-only) for the N64 today.
Not too hot at games, and not much better at writing reviews!

Blockbuster had some good deals today.
I got No More Heroes (Wii) for $11, Folklore (PS3) for $15, and Trauma Center: Second Opinion (Wii) was free. I've already played that Trauma Center but I didn't see anything else I wanted, even for free. |

We picked up another cat hacienda yesterday. This one is between the other two (the castle and the tower) in terms of cost, size, and elaborateness. It has
base, a little house on the second level, there's a little space above the house, and then a pillar that goes up to the 4th level. (By this standard, the
tower has 6 levels) It's more intended for Kitty #2 than Caramel. We put it in her temporary "nursery" upstairs. When it's next to the
window, the upper ledge is just above the bottom of the window, so it could be used for a place to sleep, or a place to look out the window.
We put some catnip on it, too. |
