I think I might be able to narrow down my picks to 2:

-Preston

Poor Preston. He loves Aurora, but it seems their relationship is not to be. Plus, if he married Aurora, then he'd be Nucleo's papa and Cory's grandpapa, and he's missing out on those relationships, too. I can imagine him taking off his big turban and putting his face against it and crying into it like a pillow all night long.

-Chester

Poor Chester. He's probably not bright enough to understand the world he lives in. He's doomed to be in situations he never really understands.

To make things worse, maybe he could get along with Honen and be educated by him, but Christopher always gets in the way and thwarts poor Chester.

Even if Preston did marry Aurora, it wouldn't change his relationship with Nucleo and Cory at all.

Band on the Run

I'll say Honen. Even though the monster he's facing now is one he's created, that doesn't mean he deserves to be cut in half by it.

I also felt sorry for him in "For the Love of an Oni", which was when I first realized that I had actually come to care about the characters. That's what I was getting at in that email I sent to Q & A. I can't think of too many comics that have a dramatic episode in the middle that doesn't completely derail the whole series.

Thanks. I think there are concrete reasons why (at least by my own standards) I avoided the usual pitfalls of inserting drama into a comedy series, not least of which is that I've gone overboard with melodrama in my writing in the past and have an idea of how far is too far.

Another reason is that there are still jokes and that no one really acts out-of-character. I think when some amateur writers attempt drama, everything gets compromised for the sake of the drama. I mentioned before how I read half of a Transformers fanfiction where all the Autobots were acting cold and introverted. But I know that Zumo will not stop being Zumo just because I, as the author, want a darker storyline.

You can imagine that, but it's only in your imagination. Preston is a confident person who is happy with his position in life. He doesn't "cry into his pillow" at night, and certainly not over Aurora. If he felt his relationship with Aurora needed to be taken further, he would. He wouldn't sit and cry about it.

FO told me that in the Prestor/Aurora relationship, she felt more sympathy for Aurora. Whoa. It's pretty mindblowing to be exposed to a different perspective like that.

I don't particularly feel sorry for any of my characters, but if I had to choose, I do think it's slightly more depressing to know that Aurora has gone through her life thinking no one could ever love her romantically because of how she looks, and yet there's someone who does, but just won't admit it. I don't feel sorry for Preston for not admitting it because that's his choice. But I don't really feel too sorry for Aurora either, since she is already quite open with her affection for him and if she wanted to take their relationship to the next level, she could do so.

Talon almost didn't get put into the series because I thought he might be too much of a "sad sack" character. But since this series takes place after he's been taken away from the bad situation and put into a better one, I didn't think it would be too much of a problem. And I felt that he'd work better with Cory for some situations than Jack does.

I don't think someone has to have no choice in their situation to deserve sympathy. Let's imagine that Preston DID try to confess his feelings for Aurora. But what if he started sputtering and stuttering and spitting and stumbling, and he couldn't get it out, and he just had to run away crying in embarrassment?

FO told me that even if Preston and Aurora had a relationship, they could never be open about it, because then Crow would kick Preston out of the school.

I don't think Crow would dare. If he kicked Preston out for that reason, Aurora would certainly leave, too. Her loyalty would have to be to her lover, especially since it's not like Crow would need to kick out Preston. Nucleo and Image would have to leave in solidarity, too, then Honen and Chance and Sesa would all leave. Crow would completely screw himself over if he threw his weight around like that.

I shouldn't have needed to tell you that, it was addressed in "Starcrossed Destinies".

You don't know that Aurora would leave, too. Crow took her in when no one else would, so her loyalty to him might still be stronger.

-But Preston isn't the one forcing Aurora to make a choice. He wouldn't mind if they both stayed. Only Crow would be forcing people to choose.

-Even if Aurora wouldn't, say, start a new school in competition with Crow's out of loyalty, she still could probably retire any time she wanted to. Having Crow boot out her lover would be pretty strong incentive. I mean, could you work with someone who booted out your lover even if you wanted to?

-Even if Aurora completely gave in to Crow, you'd have to think Nucleo would leave with Preston. Nucleo must have more loyalty to Preston than Crow; Crow has never liked Nucleo anyway. And Nucleo had previously taught elsewhere (like in Aridia) anyway.

-Firing someone because of whom they love is a pretty egregious abuse of power. It makes you wonder what Crow might do next. You'd think some teachers would leave the school in solidarity with Preston on general principle, even if they weren't particularly Preston's best friend.

The only way I could buy someone doing something that could upset the power balance that much would be if Crow himself also had a deep seated crush on Aurora he's been hiding all these years.

I just looked at that part in Star Crossed Destinies, and it seems like Preston getting worried about Crow just firing him could be in his head.

Well, yes, it could be, but even if it is, that's still part of the reason he doesn't say more. I think what's even more important is when he tells Honen, "I can deal with my emotions. I'm more concerned about you right now." Preston just doesn't see the need to take things farther and he's not blubbering about it.

I really don't have any idea why. I might be pulling strings a little with Honen in the current AT series, but sometimes I think it's necessary to put your characters through a little suffering for development.
