I think this was ripped off of us.

Seriously. This has been bothering me for some time.

Rick Astley was a (sort of) injoke around here long before this meme started. Search "Rick Astley" on the forums and you'll find more (though mostly from Prince Watercress - I think some got nuked in the hacker attack).

Seems a little suspicious. Especially since I don't really understand why else that particular 80's artist would be chosen for such a meme.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time he's ripped something off, and not the first time he's ripped something off of us in particular, although we don't know for a fact that he personally started it. (Looking through the search results again shows that PW really did make a lot of posts about him. I guess we'll know for sure if a Kylie Minogue meme gets started.)

I know it could be coincidence, but it just seemed rather odd that right after Hobbes made that post saying that his song sounded like Robo's theme, a ytmnd about it popped up. Then it becomes this huge meme out of seemingly nowhere.

Band on the Run

Both Mercury Crusader and Prince Watercress were always making references to popular internet jokes/memes/cliches, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Rick Astley thing was already a joke somewhere else and they brought it here. Unless someone else besides those two mentioned him first. The RickRolling thing probably just started more recently because of YouTube coming into existence.
