This made me think about all the research studies that have been done showing how a large majority of people consider themselves to be above average. For instance, 89% of people think that they are above the 50th percentile in social competence. This led me to think about the "average game is above average" type crap that often pervades most "7 is average" discussions. So I thought, hey, why not make a sig that says something like, "85% of games are above average." Then it hit me that based on most rating scales, this probably really is the case. Like, if I rate 10 games, give nine of them a 9 and one a 5, the average would be 8.6, literally making 90% of them above average. Depressing. I wonder if I still have my gamespot score database. Anyway, I settled for the sig below, which is more in the spirit of incongruity, but doesn't strike me as being quite as humorous. 85% of video games are above the median in quality.

This probably explains why #1 - Some people make such horrible, cliched jokes, often the same ones over and over, even when they fail to get a laugh. They actually think they're funny. I saw at another forum, I believe, people talking about how when they work as a cashier, they hear the same jokes over and over. One person said that when she scanned something, if the price didn't take right away, people would always say, "Oh, I guess that means it's free!" Because that's so funny after the millionth time. #2 - People can't communicate. They always assume the problem is with the other person. Sometimes, when I watch two other people talk, I can kind of get an objective viewpoint on their conversation, and realize that they're both completely missing the point of what the other person is saying. For myself, I know I'm below the 50th percentile in social competence. I might very well be in the 1st percentile, depending on how you quantify it. As for the joke, go with what you think is best. Don't worry about the meaning of "average" -- never sacrifice wittiness for the sake of being pedantic.

That's how they responded to a survey. And no way 89% of people are socially incompetent. Take it from one who knows. It's more like, maybe, 3%. And if you're saying that for the on-topic reason that people overestimate their ability, well, the fact that they are at least competent gives them leeway to overestimate.
