A cliche argument deserves no less than a cliche reply. One reason I've diminished my own involvement in internet message boards is because I don't feel I should be expected to keep making detailed posts explaining the same opinions and reasons I have for them over and over again, especially when it's something so basic as why I don't consider older games to not be fun anymore. This is something that's only really been an issue in the past 5-6 years or so. Early internet had more people from all walks of life and opinions, but it seems like almost everyone who shows up here lately immediately comes in with the same exact attitude.
It's the Azure Dreams Effect. Everyone from that era except you and me is gone now. Every few years a new wave of people come in as older ones leave and
they start over again at Level 0. 1995-Land. Honestly, could not have finished this
sketch at a more appropriate time (me and my not-so-subtle subtexts and symbolism).
I think that's a strawman unless other people are saying that, but that's not true of me. It's just that things like game music are nice (but cameos are boring, I wouldn't read through that shit if you paid me), but what's REALLY special about your site is your writing. That's why people come here because it's YOUR site and they want to see YOUR writing. There's something special about you that no one else has, and anyone can document game cameos or post game music mp3s, but NO ONE can write like you can. THAT'S what people mean when they say they want you to stop taking reader submissions and just work on your own stuff. They aren't saying the readers are dumb it's just that they want to see your unique point of view. If those readers want an outlet for their POV, they can make their own site.
Cameos had a number of problems, so I won't go into that one again, but as for the music - again, you're assuming a cause and effect here. I was
only doing music because I'm not really interested in writing reviews right now. I appreciate your sentiment, but eventually you're going to have to
admit that about 75% of the writing on my site is garbage and while I have come a long way, I still have a ways to go. When people complain about the
submissions, no, they don't usually come right out and say everyone is stupid, but it seems like it's implied. And it bothers me when someone who is
playing by the rules and also has demonstrated knowledge of the site is lumped in the same category with the PW's.
This is why you people should stop pressuring me to "Duh, make a webcomic!" because I feel the RAU Gallery is a perfect intelligence test. Some people are going to read and it and say, "I don't get it. Where's the facial expressions?" others are going to read it and WILL get it. One of the people whose submissions I was screening and approving passed that test. *smack!* Pay attention! You can either have certain standards and expectations for minimum intelligence level and behavior, or you can be an anything goes free-for-all like GameFAQs.
Unfortunately, a battle with cancer forced me to step down around that time and FO took the reigns after (what I understand) was a huge ugly battle between the GP's Total Nonsense Forum and the General Discussion ForumI'm sorry, Beej. I seem to have completely forgotten about that. I hope you're doing well and I really miss seeing you around. You were a better admin than you think. Anyone would go crazy trying to keep control over that place. You're this forum's Nucleo McRaven.
