I'll spare some of the details of my plans for now. I've already made a bit of saw dust and some progress. Most recently, I joined some wood for the body of the guitar:
I got some material for making a pickup, and I also got a nut and a bridge.
So, now I'm at the stage where I need to design what it looks like. After that, I'll make a 1:1 scale drawing on a large sheet of paper, and then I'll make a lifesized version of the guitar in plywood (which will also serve as a template for the real guitar).
Here are some of my thoughts when designing this:
First, almost everyone says that a first guitar should have the basic two-horn-with-cutaway template (think the stratocaster). As opposed to something like the (for their time) far out Gibson Flying V or Explorer. (I'm actually not clear why a flying V would be difficult to build -- the body shape must be about as simple as you can get, except maybe a Bo Diddley box. But maybe it's difficult to get it to balance) That's okay with me, though. (I hate the way flying V's look)
I want it to be semi-hollow, with an "f-hole". I'd like the maximum acoustic / unplugged sound I can get, without actually making a semi-acoustic or archtop (which sounds like an order of magnitude difficulty increase over making a solid electric). So, to do that, I need the maximum hollow volume. And to get THAT, I need to make it a little bigger than average (compared to a stratocaster or something).
I started by drawing something that was modeled after a stratocaster, but just a little bigger. However, when I drew it myself, I noticed that most electric guitars get really narrow at the top, and have really spindly top horns. I didn't really want that look -- plus, spindly horns won't meet my goal of a large acoustic volume -- so I tried doodling variations, making the horns bigger, then smaller, changing the shape a bit, etc.
I eventually got something I'm kind of happy with (this was drawn to quarter scale):
Any feedback?
It looks kinda like a cross between a Les Paul and Stratocaster to me.
I marked the position of the bridge, the 12th fret on the neck, and the shape of the neck. I still need to design the headstock, but I don't see why that can't be done later. I haven't marked the position of the pickup, but I'll only one use (humbucker), near the bridge. I also have to design the sound hole, which will be on the bass side. The connector will be on the front of the guitar, kind of like a stratocaster, as opposed to on the edge, which is how most guitars do it (but I won't use a standard connection)
