Creating this topic in honor of my LotR character looking slightly better
than homeless for the first time. He's at level 16 now and I've lately been enjoying collecting silver and barrow-iron ore, making them into
ingots, and profiting off of other players with money to burn. I find the whole crafting aspect of the game to be addictive. I'm thinking about having
different characters with different professions that complement each other. I could make a weaponsmith and have my prospector send him metals that will be
useful so he wouldn't have to overpay or trade for them.

Last night, I read through one of FO's new Nintendo Powers. It had a page or two of a debate on the merits of the Super NES versus the Genesis. It's
not like it would have been during the 16-bit era -- the person defending the Genesis probably dominated the debate, rhetorically.
In terms of substance, though, it was retarded. The SNES defender said that the SNES had better RPGs and adventures. The Genesis person shot back Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Beyond Oasis, and said that the Genesis had better selection in those genres. That was the last word on that. Uh .... No. It's pretty much a fact that the SNES is better with RPGs and adventures. Final Fantasy IV alone pretty much settles it. Compare it, a ground breaking game, to Phantasy Star IV, a by the numbers exercise in RPG mediocrity. But it's not like the SNES doesn't have selection, too. It's not just Final Fantasy and Zelda. Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Soul Blazer, Inindo, Arcana, Illusion of Gaia, Dragon View, Earthbound, Breath of Fire, and on and on. Where the Genesis dominates the Super NES is its shooter library. This point was not brought up. The Genesis has Thunder Force II, III, Gaiares. The Super NES has, well, R-Type III is okay, but that's not enough, and it is clearly the least of 1, 2, 3 and Delta. Axelay is overrated. I got the feeling from the article that both people had only superficial experience with the systems. |

ActRaiser 2 - Well, I finally beat the cave with the Alien Queen boss at the end. That was the easiest stage I could find. I also beat Death Field, and both of
the water stages. Still having trouble with Industen. The game suggests going there first but I have no idea why. It seems like one of the hardest stages.
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. -

Actually, Genesis shooters were mentioned -- very briefly.
The reason it seems like the Genesis side won was because that guy said absolutely preposterous shit and didn't get called on it at all. "Insane is waiting two years for a 16-bit console. While you were putzing around with Color a Dinosaur or whatever came out for the NES in those days, I was welcoming the next level with The Revenge of Shinobi and Sonic the Hedgehog." "Whatever came out for the NES in those days"? Like Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania 3, Crystalis, Final Fantasy, etc.? The NES peaked after the Genesis was released. Color a Dinosaur, it turns out, was released in '93, significantly later than Super Mario World. Why give these people a voice? Here's the article, anyway. Link. |

no, i think they learnt that from fashion magazines. the writers anyway. the sega 16-bit defender didn't mention after burner?!? evil. i thought the
genesis was pretty much for platform game. sonic was the star of it. i remember associating the SNES with street fighter and other fighting games though.

forgot to post this and "edit" is funky
=== der langrisser: it seems that i already missed the secret cho aniki scenario in scenario 6. and a whole bunch of hidden runes/items in earlier scenarios. oh well, maybe when i go for the independent/evil path much later(think i would need to concentrate on training hein and rohga much earlier if i want to take on that path). reloaded scenario 7 and went for the light path(not joining leon). scenario 8 for the light path is much easier. i get 18 turns to complete instead of 19 turns for the imperials, but harpies are a lot easier to deal with than dragoons and angels. and instead of having to defeat lester(as a serpent lord), i only have to deal with a high lord. there's suppose to be another hidden scenario here but i can't find it. maybe gamefaqs was wrong. scenario 9 for the light path is bit more trickier, but again i'm up against weaker troops compared to the imperial path. i have to defeat imelda before her troops kill off all the innocent citizens... ah, nearly completed. pretty easy as long as i have flying units to rush to the fort's rescue. but even without the fliers, aaron alone may be strong enough to block the imperials from the citizens. ... ack. i don't think i can complete another imperial scenario. too tough. scenario 17, i'm badly outnumbered and surrounded right from the start, and as usual the enemy heroes/commanders have higher classes and levels than my heroes. shite. i think i need to restart my imperial , concentrate more on training up hein and rohga, and acquire the manliness of thy supermanly anikis. i don't think i ever wanna screw with the indie/evil path if i'm gonna be outnumbered even more badly than in the imperial path. feels like playing the deity difficulty level in the civilization games. btw, there's an evil one named "boser" in this game and the main heroine can be promoted to a secret "princess" class. i should have renamed elwin to mario. boser tried to kidnap the "princess"(with the help of the imperials) too. her twin sister is another potential princess who works for boser. |

I beat The Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Fun game, but a little too easy. I kind of agree with FO about the towns detracting from the game. Every time I got to
a new chapter, I felt like I was just waiting the whole time to get to the action scenes, and then they're over before you know it. Maybe I should try
Pocky & Rocky next since I heard it's a similar game and doesn't have all that fluff.

If any Futurama fans are interested, the all new movie is out now on DVD. It'll probably be coming to TV before long, but just wanted to mention it.
I'm going to watch it during our Christmas Eve festivities but I got it from Amazon today, so I know it's out everywhere.
Edit: I added GPT Epsilon to the archive and wandered around in Lord of the Rings for a little while. Might go to get a Christmas tree today although it's supposed to snow, so we'll see how it goes.

Well, I beat Albert Odyssey a fourth and final time. It's kind of funny that I used to be such a big fan of that game because it is so generic. Well, I
guess I found the music and dialog really entertaining the first time I played through it and I was really young at the time, too. If I can find an English
translation I might try playing the Super Famicom Albert Odyssey games (emulated, of course). The strategy-based battles sound interesting and it'd be nice
to finally know the entire story behind this series.

usually avoid any rpg which sounds better as a straight up platform game.

I did the Silo and Frigate in Goldeneye. One of the hostages in the Frigate got executed, and I shot another in the shoulder because he ran in front of me
while I was firing at a bad guy, but I don't think I killed him, just made him stagger a bit.

Well, I played about 30 minutes of Paper Mario. I think I like it's intro a lot more than Thousand Year Door's city exploration. I also like that
Bowser is the main villain. Not much has really happened, though. I just got the hammer and the first badge.
The one female goomba grandchild looks almost exactly like Goombella from TYD. Although in the original, it's a male goomba kid that has the role of tip provider. The graphics are better than I expected. The screenshots I've seen online make the game look a lot worse than it is. It doesn't strike me as looking much different than Thousand Year Door at most times, although I know the sequel has larger environments and more sprites. |

James FP wrote: Oh, but Pocky & Rocky 2 DOES have "all that fluff". I didn't really get very far into it, but it begins with one of the worst and most pointless tutorials I've ever seen in my life. That type of game does NOT need a tutorial! Especially since I'd think anyone who bought Pocky & Rocky 2 probably at some point played the first one, which is "tutorial" enough. Although it doesn't separate its "towns" from the action areas, it seems like part of the point of the game is to earn enough money from defeated enemies to buy items necessary for beating bosses. Yes, and I do MEAN "necessary". Someone told me that I couldn't beat the Level 2 boss on my own, I needed to use the "Option Bomber", which I bought from her store. I wouldn't doubt I was supposed to do something like that for Level 1 as well. The boss took FOREVER and a day to kill. Oh, and you have more partners in P&R2 besides Rocky and getting certain power-ups will switch the partner. One of them is this big guy who tosses a rock. Yeah. He tosses a rock. He's completely worthless and I was stuck with him in the Level 1 boss fight and that might be why it took so long to kill it. It's HP is probably adjusted to be taking damage from two players, but that useless rock couldn't be flung far enough to get in any hits. I'm kind of glad I held out on getting this game. It might get better the farther I get into it (and so long as I avoid getting that moron with the rock in my party), but it didn't leave a good first impression. Man, I hated the intro and the graphics of Paper Mario. The intro was slow paced; it just took forever. The intro of Super Mario RPG was great. It tossed
you right into the action. No long cinema scenes - just straight to Bowser's castle! You get to experience the gameplay right away.
I thought the graphics were blurry, and even head-ache inducing. It was just so weird to go from the beautiful 2D graphics of Yoshi's Island and Super Mario RPG to Paper Mario. FJMcCloud back at Nsider would always swear up and down that the N64 could do 2D better than the Super NES (as opposed to being compromised to just do 3D), but I never saw any actual games demonstrate that. |

Man, I hated the intro and the graphics of Paper Mario.Good thing you didn't play Thousand Year Door, then. I thought the graphics were blurry, and even head-ache inducing. It seems pretty clear to me. It's possible that they cleaned it up a little for the Virtual Console release. I've seen it mentioned that some N64 games run in higher resolution now. |

Good thing you didn't play Thousand Year Door, then. Why? I don't know about the intro, but the graphics look cleaner. The only problem is that they might be clean to the point of being soulless. |

Yeah, I meant the intro. Paper Mario 1's intro seemed totally painless in comparison to Thousand Year Door, unless I'm wrong about the intro being over
now that I've got the hammer.
I tried playing TYD a couple times and ended up quitting well before the game even got started in both cases. Third time I finally got through it. |

I reached Toad Town. Unless I'm much less sensitive, and that doesn't seem likely, they must have done something to make the visuals appear sharper. I
admit that they're even crisper in Thousand Year Door, but I don't notice anything out of the ordinary in this game.
Edit: I went to Shooting Star Hill (that's probably not the actual name) and afterwards got the ability to use timed attacks. I was almost convinced that they weren't going to be in the game at all. I see that the hammer timing works exactly the same was in TYD. I'm now on my way to the fortress where the first star thingy is being held. It's been a weird thing playing the series in reverse order starting with Super Paper Mario. Based on early impressions, I'm expecting this to be the middle game, better than TYD but weaker than SPM. Edit #2: Turbine is offering a special subscription price for Lord of the Rings online. Normally an expensive 14.95 per month, if you switch during this holiday season to their 3-month at a time plan, you can be put permanently on what comes to the equivalent of 9.99 per month. You can't cancel or change plans and then come back without going back to the full price, though. In Paper Mario, the koopa character joined. I want to say his name is Koops, but I think that might be the name of the koopa ally in TYD. The progression of this game has been almost the same so far, which makes TYD look even worse for being so unoriginal. First a goomba that tattles on enemies and gives advice on townspeople then a koopa who has a shell special move for hitting distant switches and an attack-all shell move in battle. It's exactly the same in both games, and the characters even look nearly identical. The stages in this game so far seem to be more 2D in nature than in TYD, which seemed to have you moving up and down the screen more often and being more like any other 3D RPG. Interestingly in this game, allies don't have HP of their own, only Mario takes damage. Edit #3 Billion: I beat the Koopa Bros. at their fortress and saved the first star guy, completing Chapter 1. Not a remarkably interesting dungeon but not annoying, anyway. The bosses were pretty easy, but you had to use a variety of moves, so it wasn't as boring as it might have been at this early stage of the game. I got a bob-omb party member. You get one in TYD too, but at least there are some noticeable differences this time, including gender, size, age, and color of the character.

I thought this screenshot I found of Paper Mario was representative:
I think what creates the impression of blurriness is -Pixelated foreground characters. -Blinding pastel palate -Background objects so indistinct, it seems like they're out of focus That last could be a real killer for me. When you see something, your eye involuntarily tries to focus it. When it strains to do that to no avail, since no focusing will make those objects more clear, it leads to headaches. Another thing that annoyed me, though I couldn't find a screenshot that illustrates it, is that when a larger font is needed, they just blow up a smaller one, so it looks pixelated, and, generally, like crap. That also causes eye strain. |

If that's how the game actually looks when you play it, then they definitely changed it. It looks nothing like that now. The sprites in particular, but
everything is so much clearer than that image portrays. There was just a scene with Bowser when I was playing and I was thinking to myself that he looks almost
exactly as good as he does on the GameCube and Wii Paper Mario games he's in.
For progress, I edited my above posted again right as Crawl was making his post, so refer to that. End of Chapter 1. |

In Paper Mario, I found the letters for Parakarry and he joined the group. He flies Mario over gaps that can't be jumped. I found a really useful defense
badge. Now, unless I mess up the timing on my defending, he can't take any damage. I think I'm actually in Dry Dry Desert now, but I saved right at the
beginning of the area, so I'll have to check again to be sure.
When I bought my Wii bundle last year, it game with a 1 Gig SD Memory Card. I finally opened it up and transferred some Virtual Console games to it since the internal memory was getting uncomfortably low. I think that with the Wii likely to be around for years and tons of new downloadable games and other content to come, they'll eventually have to enable you to play games directly off of memory cards instead of swapping back and forth. |

de langrisser:
changed my strategy a bit for S17 and i prevailed!! but seems like i'm not allowed to get sonya to join me if i didn't move rohga near her(so he can try to convince her to stop being evil) in previous missions. well crap. i'll have to complete this imperial game with 7 heroes instead of 8. bah. not sure i can do it again. surrounded again in scenario 18 and now they have terrain advantage. crappity crap crap. ... maybe i shouldn't be such a pessimist. i'm now at scenario 20 fighting off the last of the light warriors, so the imperials could kidnap back the shrine maidens(need them to reseal alhazard(got that after beating dark master boser) and langrisser so no one will abuse their powers). should be the second last scenario. doesn't seem so hard since i now have both the alhazard and langrisser, and i bought a flame lance for vargas. found a secret item in scenario 19, which lets me summon fenrir. nice stats(40 attack, 28 defence),and it 3 spells which do moderate amounts of damage. oh, and another little treasure in S20, in the middle of the moat. there're boxes to choose from, i chose the left one and got a runestone(for reseting(sp?) to previous class after leveling up. not very useful without using a gameshark to switch scenarios and train up.) don't think i need that , so i reloaded. was still a bitch to train up rohga. his defence is just too poor for him to be useful, and as i said before, his bandits/elves/soldiers get killed too easily. already leveled up hein to swordmaster, and rohga's still a level 5 swordsman. maybe he requires more experience to level? hein's experience bar does look shorter than the other heroes' bars. oh well, egbert and imelda are at level 9 of their 3rd class... egbert's salamander was fairly good for killing a few things. his blast spell is powerful but short-ranged. annoying thing is, a lot of the monsters were immune or resistant to magic. the good news was, imelda's sage attack seems to work very well on monsters and undead, but not so well on those vampires with their high defence. ... found weird easter egg of sorts. of the 3 boxes i can pick in the secret tile of S20, one of them has a magic mushroom. before discarding it because it's useless, there's some text which says "... you feel no urge to stomp on turtles or crawl in pipes..." i really should have renamed elwin to mario. i'm surprised there's no secret plumber class. ... completed the imperial path. yay! the last scenario was sickening easy. i probably could have leveled up rohga to his lousy 4th class if i wanted to, but i went straight for the main objective(kill jessica/calaise from warsong). her archmage class (even when sitting on the throne with a 40% bonus) was no match for leon with the langrisser. there's a slightly different ending if i get either of the shrine maidens killed. but it made no difference to the whatyoucallit where it tells you what happened to each of the characters after the ending. if i got one of the maidens killed, there'll be a scene where elwin(ernie) and gang fight off people trying to steal the alharzard sword, and ernie wondering what will happen when they die and there's no one left to guard the swords. i guess that's a slightly worse ending. the regular ending would show ernie and leon fighting off robbers , and saying they will unite the land under the empire soon. i guess there's still another slightly different imperial ending if i had chosen to fight the light warriors before fighting boser. can't be buggered to replay just to see that variation. overall i thought the imperial ending was quite terrible. the 4 lengendary dragon generals all met an untimely(sp?) death. leon got assassinated(sp?) by some bugger who was loyal to the light warriors even though he ruled his land honourably. imelda also got whacked, but she deserved it since she supposedly became a tyrant. vargas got killed in battle covering his men's ass. and eggbert died of bad health while writing a draft for some peace treaty. rohga disappeared somewhere to get over the death of sonya(i guess he would have had a happy ending if i got sonya to join). ernie seem to be the only one with an okay ending. his ending didn't mention anything about liana, so i guess she still hates him for joining the bloody empire. maybe he died alone, or went gay with leon. and hein... poor hein's end... i think the cho anikis kidnapped him... === saw the taiwanese version of princess maker 4 and 5 in a bookstore. makes me feel dirty and/or gay... er.. i'm not big on simulator games like i used to be. pm4 | |||
