The instructions were deeply confusing, but I eventually figured out that the confusing stuff only pertained if you were trying to get an excuse from jury duty. If you were planning on being available, all you had to do was call the night before. That night would be tonight. And it turns out I don't have to show up. Well, for tomorrow, anyway. Jury duty is possible for at least two days, so I have to call again tomorrow night. I am kind of disappointed that I don't have to go, which surprises FO a bit. Well, for one thing, it would be a change of pace. And I could make an extra $10!

There was no direct bus there, so I would have had to be on multiple busses for hours each day with no real guarantee of them being on time. They granted it. I didn't mention this, but there's also the fact that I'd have to wait for a bus in Atlantic City which is probably the worst bus station around here to be waiting alone at, second to Pleasantville. Reminds me of those 80s movies where tourists would get lost and the optimist in the group would see a sign and say, "Look! We're in Pleasantville! That isn't so bad. Sounds like a really friendly place", and anyone whose seen a movie like that knows what happens next. I've never been called for Jury Duty.

It didn't work. It wasn't until the prosecutor found out I was a Ph.D. student in psychology that I was dismissed.

From what I've heard, something like that is more likely to get you charged with contempt of court than out of jury duty. I'm sure judges have heard or seen all the excuses before. (The story in Malcolm X's autobiography about how he got out of the draft was funny, though)

A psychology student might be aware, for example, of the unreliability of eye witness testimony. However, the lawyers would probably only want a juror to doubt eye witness testimony if the lawyers or a witness made some sort of argument relating to its reliability. One legal standard that comes up a lot is that of a "reasonable person". Like, in cases of negligent homocide, would a reasonable person have expected there to have been a danger? But being "reasonable" is relative.
