All the dark swords in shops tended to suck pretty hard. The solution... just steal some holy weaponry. It's still a sword, do you really need to dress all bright and shiny and practically change genders to use one? No. And so Cecil, the Holy Knight of Darkness, Kain (disguised as a dead Cecil), and Cecil's brother Cecil disguised as Kain (who also later died) defeated Zeromus in a story that would confuse untold generations.
