I just started playing Breath of Fire II. Something I had been planning on even before the recent discussion of it. It's recently become available as a Wii download, so I went for it today. The intro does a really good job of drawing you in. The translation is poorly written, we all know that, but it seems a lot more interesting after trying to figure out the Garland paradox in FF1 yet again. There's also the fact that my expectations were rather low going into it and most sentences are more coherent than I thought they would be.
It's really weird how much of a difference playing on a television can make versus using emulation. I'm feeling such nostalgia, and so many memories from the time we got the game are coming back to me. This never happened when I would mess around with the game on my PC. While nothing at all fancy, the speakers I use for the consoles are much, much better than what I've got available for my PC, and a soundtrack I already like is a lot more enjoyable. I obviously don't know if this means I'll be able to play the game through to the end with my poor attention span, but it's a start.
To elaborate on the memories, this was one of the last RPG's I played and enjoyed with my dad. It had been intended for the coming Christmas but since we had also purchased FF7 and Ocarina of Time, it seemed like it wouldn't do any harm to open this "lesser" game early. We really had a blast playing it at the time and it turned out that he didn't care for Zelda or FF7 much at all when we finally tried those. I even remember the trip to FuncoLand to buy these games and looking at the packaging (BOF2 was cart only) on the way home. I had been a Nintendo Power subscriber at the time and I dug out any issues relevant to the game. I remember at least one Epic Center that dealt with it, maybe on how to get the best ending.
For other things, I've watched the entire first season of Venture Brothers and loved it. I'm starting on the second one.
