PS3 Price Cut, BUT... |
Lead | |
|
The 60GB PS3 will now be $499. An 80GB version is on the way for the same price. However, the 80GB version will be using emulation for PS2 games rather than
the PS2 chip, meaning that it's ability to run the entire library of games will be crippled, just like the 360.

I thought PS3 wasn't fully backwards compatible now, because I heard some guy at Gamers Annonymous talking about how the only PS2 game he could run on his
PS3 was something like Barbie Horse Adventures.

Well, there was a Penny Arcade comic about that game being on the 360's compatibility list:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2006/20060109h.jpg Current PS3's in the USA should play 99% of games as they have the physical PS2 chip built in, which is costing Sony money. The PS3's out in Europe are already using emulation, with PS2 games running anywhere between not at all, to "partial" (which I take to mean badly) and normal. Now Sony is bringing that model over here as well to save more money. |

Odd that the system with the PS2 chip would be the cheaper one.
In any case, even with the price drop, the system is still obscenely priced. |

I think you've got that reversed. They started with the chip, which was too expensive, so now they're going to flawed emulation. I probably
could've explained it a little more coherently before.

I didn't get that from your post. I thought I read elsewhere that the 80 GB version that uses flawed emulation would sell for the pre-cut price.
Here. Sony Computer Entertainment America announced that it would be cutting the price of the 60GB model of the PlayStation 3 console in North America to $499 |

Ah, when you used the phrase "cheaper one" I thought you were talking about it being cheaper for Sony to manufacture. And my incorrect assumption was
that the 80GB model would be available for $499. What they're doing then, is just replacing the $499 30GB model with the 60GB and adding the 80GB to
replace the $599 60GB as the upper-tier version of the console. And free Motorstorm, which is no big deal.
You're right, it would seem to be good news for those concerned about backwards compatibility, as the version best at that will be the least costly. I would expect that at some point, every PS3 is going to switch to software emulation, though. |

The truth comes out: that's no price cut! It's more of a clearance sale for a discontinued model:

I was originally gonna go with "That's no price cut... it's a space station." but sadly, it's nonsensical.

It sounds like they cut backwards compatibility not because of cost cutting but because...
Tretton told the paper that taking support for PS2 games out of the new system isn't dramatically cutting manufacturing costs. However, by omitting the option of playing PS2 games, Sony hopes that new customers will instead spend their money on more PS3 games. |

I don't suppose anyone here would want to buy my PS3 for real, huh? I could use the money.
It's got the backwards compatibility going for it, 60GB hard drive, wireless controller, all cables, original box, perfect condition. $349.00? Don't think anyone here has expressed any interest in the system, though. |

What? you mean you're not going to wait for Metal Gear Solid 4 and/or Final Fantasy XIII?
I would probably say no. It's a possibility, but I'd definately want to spend much time thinking it over, first. It's only been recently that I've been even considering getting one, so if I did buy it now, it would be an impulse buy, (and quite a high-priced one, at that!) Additionally, even that price is too high, (not in comparison to other used Playstation 3 prices, on that merit, your deal sounds fair. It's too expensive in comparison to the general price range of what I usually would pay for a video game system. [$250-$300.]) The other thing that's holding me back is that I've been spending too much on luxury items, (namely video games,) recently, so I would want to wait. I want it more than I'd imagine most, (if not all,) other members on this forum want it, but I'm still not that interested. |

I have only the slightest interest in FF13 right now and I've never been a MGS fan. I'm sure it'll have some excellent games, but I've been
losing interest in games in general lately. On top of that, I just took a pretty big financial hit from something I can't really discuss now.
I think if I scale back and focus on just one or two systems I'd be better off. In a way, I think it would be better if I sold everything but the Wii and DS but being totally cut off from the so called hardcore systems completely might be annoying. Plus I don't know about selling the 360 since it's so prone to self destructing and mine occasionally makes some weird noises. That'd scare an ebay bidder away real quick. In a way, I'm kind of hoping that I might end up becoming obsessed with an MMO like Facilitypro and not even bother with regular games for a long time. I'd have to stop being such an online loner to be able to stick with one for months or years, though. Anyway, I've been reading that the new 40GB PS3's at the lower prices have no backwards compatibility for PS2 games at all, not even by emulation, so keep that in mind when shopping if it matters to you. |

I think the most I have ever paid for a videogame system was $200 for the Super NES when it was new. But I don't remember what I paid for the Turbo Duo,
so I might be wrong.
For other systems, I paid $100 for my NES, $130 for my first Playstation, and less than $100 for my N64. None were used. (The N64, though, was purchased after they were no longer manufactured) That's more in line with what I'd expect to pay for a game system. But I don't think I'd buy a Playstation 3 even for around that price, since I'm not sure what I'd do with it even if it somehow just magically appeared among my possessions. |

I was already aware of the 40 GB PS3's lack of PS2 backwards compatibility, CB007, but thank you for your advice, nonetheless.
Actually, when I said that the range of $250-300 is what I would pay for a video game system, that's more hypothetical. I, personally, have never paid more than $50 for a video game system, and that was for my Gameboy Color! Outside of that, the most I've paid is, if I am correct, $30! Most of the systems that I own I got after their retail-life had ended, used, either purchased for low prices, or as a free gift/hand-me-down from close friends and relatives. We have an XBox 360, too, but I only paid $25 of it. (My younger brother wanted to buy one, but knew he wasn't the only one who would use it, so he got other family members to help pay. I knew I wouldn't be able to play it that much, [I would leave for college in only a few weeks, and thus it would basically only be on holidays that I'd actually get a chance to play it,] so I pitched in only $25, and my brother accepted it.) I got a Gameboy Advance during it's retail life, too, but that was another case of pitching in, so I don't think I spent more than $30 on it. All of the other systems were purchased at prices closer to Crawl's target price range. My siblings and I received our Gamecube and Nintendo 64 as gifts from our parents, each bundled with a game, for $100 and $130, respectively. We also got a Nintendo DS, as a Christmas present right after its launch, for $150. (It was mainly for my aforementioned brother, he was the one who really wanted it. I was opposed to the decision, because I thought it was risky. At that time, the system had virtually no games, and the PSP was going to be released soon. I thought the DS might flop, and thus, recieve a limited library of games. Fortunately, I was wrong.)
