Isn't it weird that so often old licensed games were turned into action games (and particularly sidescrollers). Maybe it would have made more sense to have turned them into RPGs. That would let you get the dialogue and the story and make the game more faithful to the movie. And you wouldn't have to dream up a new, crazy game mechanic for every movie / game (which is the other thing that licensed games did).

Maybe back in the day, people didn't think RPGs sold, but, on the other hand, the license was supposed to sell the game, anyway, not the game itself.

The other thing is that some licensed games were blantantly make-money-quick schemes. Of course, every RPG doesn't have to have production values like Final Fantasy. For licensed games where at least some significant effort was put into them, maybe an RPG could have been made with equivalent effort. For other games, like, again, maybe Jaws, you couldn't make an RPG with such a low investment.

I think for the best challenging games I've played, I'm usually hooked before the game becomes very hard. Then there's no question of whether I want to keep playing, or if the game is cheap, for that matter.

Although I think challenge is the most important part of a videogame, it's not like I think discussions of when games go overboard is off limits. However, I think almost everyone like the author of the linked article is starting from a completely wrong place that's not gonna go anywhere fruitful.
