Holy crap, you should send that to FAILblog or something.
The sad part is you could do that to alot of game reviews, and get very similar results. What was it that "impressed the hell" out of him? Was he floored by how completely and utterly identical the game is to the original?

A game with that many flaws is definitely 9.8 material.

I didn't do the highlighting, and that's not the entire review. But when I was reading it in the issue it was contained it, yeah, the WTF flags were
fully unfurled.
I think we've talked before about the reasons you should never use the term "perfect" or "flawless" as the upper anchor for a 10 point scale--because when you see something stupid like a clipping error, people (or worse, the reviewer) can construe it as a flaw. Unless it's God Hand. Then clipping errors make the game fun.
85% of video games are above the median in quality.

The last line even admits that the game doesn't have longevity, and will probably be forgotten in a couple of years...
But, hey, that's what endless parades of sequels are for!

Facilitypro wrote:So, other people have noticed this, too? Maybe that's a step in the right direction. Facilitypro wrote: That's okay. It's not like after reading that I would have read any farther. That whole, "You can always think of a reason not award a 10" is, for lack of a better word, pretty douche'y. They're trying to give themselves carte blanche to give any big hit a 10/10, regardless of whether it lives up to the hype, and stifle any objections, because even if the objections are valid, "you can always think of a reason not to award a ten". Of course, you can turn that around. Fanboys of obscure genres or games can now legtimately demand all their favorite games get 10's, because even if EGM can think of reasons to not give them 10's, they would have been able to think of such reasons anyway. FacilityPro already implied this with where he was saying how he was struggling whether or not to give it a 10. Of course, if it's such a struggle, then the choice should be clearbut if you're not 100% sure a game should get a 10, it shouldn't get a 10. There are other scores. Like 9! Or even 8! |

What I don't get is, why do people do this? I mean, sure, if you're getting paid you'll probably give every popular game a 10! or a 9! to avoid
controversy. But why do the fanboys do it? Why do normal gamers eat this stuff up, and jump on the hype wagon? What do they get for giving games perfect 10s on
GameFaqs or pressuring critics into praising every popular game?
All they get, it seems, is shittier games. It's a lose-lose situation.

10 out of 10: What were we thinking? This basically makes it sound like they end up regretting it every time, but you know they'll just keep doing it, anyway. |

Really, though, these game reviewers command some pretty advanced double-think. First they give a perfect score to a game they spend half the review bashing,
then they glibly ask us to excuse them for the rating because they're bizarre:
Video games reviews that conclude with a perfect score always draw the ire of gamers convinced that reviewers are accepting bushels of cash from greedy publishers. We, however, have a different theory: Our perfect scores are oftentimes bizarre. Whether it's writers stumbling over their words or just using flowery language, the following games don't deserve such lofty praise. That's a great "theory." And about the ire, I don't recall them ever rescinding a review or firing their staff because the readers were outraged at a perfect score. |

The reader comment are just sad.
Here's a sampling: "m COD 4 and Bioshock definitely deserve 10 out 10. Just the story line alone brings it out and makes it stand above all others. the other games though i would agree that they are not 10 out of 10s." I also love how all the articles on that site have reader reviews of "boo, you suck" 1 star, or "OMG perfect 10!!!" 5 stars. Also notice that the ones that get voted down are the ones involving politics, the environment, dissenting opinions, or you know, just thinking in general. And gamers wonder why they're so reviled by everyone else?

Their list also has Mario Clash on it.
*Wayne's World flashback* I remember back at the old board I was saying that it was no surprise that the Virtual Boy failed. I mean, it cost $180, was in red monochrome, and one of the games for it (Mario Clash) was nothing but Mario Bros. Not even Super Mario Bros. $180+. In 1995. To play a game from 1983. On a tiny red screen. And someone there said he didn't care about any of that tangible stuff. Mario Clash was "fun". Of course, that same person also declared Super Mairo Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 overrated. |

That last line makes me cringe:
Is it worth an upgrade? Put it this way - if it wasn't for the loss of the GBA slot, we'd have traded ours already. So if you don't care for GBA games, then yes - upgrade and smile. If not... how does being the proud owner of two DS systems sound? It sounds like a waste of money. The rest of the article seems overenthusiastic but not that bad. I never understood why gamers ooh and aah over the ungamey stuff, though. |

Well, it's nice I don't have to connect seperate devices to play music discs and DVDs when I have my PS2, Xbox, or 360, but when companies decide their
systems playing games is an afterthought, it reflects how much heart they put into said games (NGage).
But then again, all the Wii does is play games, and most of its library is shovelware, and the DS was heading down that route even before the DSi.

But usually Gamefaqs is better than the "pro" sites, if only for having more diversity of opinion. One example I think of was when Gamespot gave
Twilight Princess an 8.8, and that was somehow "controversial" for the fanboys. It got a lot of tens elsewhere, so apparently they thought 100% of
people will love that game with 100% of their hearts.
Gamefaqs gives that game plenty of 10's. But it's average for the Gamecube is ... 8.7. Just lower than the "controversial" score. |
