Sailor Moon is not a show that really responds well to critical examination, because that's not what it's about.

Saying, "This is a show that does not really respond well to critical examination" is just long hand for "This show is bad".

But even at the time, despite that I spent more time laughing at the show than with it, I always felt that Sailor Moon had a certain intrinsic charm.

It seems that just like videogame reviews, when you can't say something tangibly good about an anime, but you want to praise it anyway, you can use vague words like "charm".

I also love how in the Sailor Moon clip, they say, "There's millions of them!" And the camera pans back, and they're surrounded by clearly just over a dozen.

And the animation of that show makes me feel like I'm having a seizure, like how during the transformations, a character is animated for a few frames ... then noticeably stops ... then is animated for a couple more frames ... then stops...

And they're robots. They can be fixed.

Presumably, being fixed so many times would be a drain on energy or resources ... which is exactly the situation Cybertron is in at the beginning of the series.

With all this talk, I went on Youtube and watched a few episodes of Sailor Moon in Japanese. The dialogue is a little more natural sounding, even amusing (assuming correct translation)

I think the Japanese voices are terrible. They're high-pitched, screeching, and the actors feel the need to SCREAM!!! all their lines.

I guess the idea is that's what little girls might really sound like, but how many adults (no pedophiles, please) want to listen to little kids talk?

Then you might name the Peanuts cartoons, but those kids at least didn't scream their lines, so you got the natural sound without the nails on chalkboard effect.

Wow, I can't believe how terriblethis review of Seinfeld's final episode is.

Criticizing Seinfeld's final episode should be like shooting fish in a barrel. It's not original! It's just a clip show! It doesn't have a plot, instead relying on the cliche of courtroom testimonies! I liked the series, but even when I first watched the finale, I felt obvious disappointment. It was no ending of Arrested Development.

On the other hand, that review makes me think, "You know, the finale wasn't that bad after all. It did have some funny parts." And he clearly doesn't get what he's criticizing.

Let's start with the stand up routine. The guy says that Jerry must think he's a genius to notice that people say things like "We need to sit down." Uh, no, the point is not that he is unique for noticing that. As George Carlin said, for an audience to laugh at a comedian's observations, they must have observed the same thing. The point is that the comedian ties a lot of observations together.

And people have made jokes about sitting before. A classic (or cliche) one is, "You better sit down." "I am sitting." "Well, then stand up [so you can sit down again]". Seinfeld started there, but then pointed out that, for some reason, we have tons of expressions just about sitting.

George gets a big laugh from the studio audience (please tell me it's a laugh track, I can't believe real humans are feebleminded enough to laugh at material this inept) when he ends a rant by saying "I'm sick of health." Get it? Sick of health.

It's like, what? He's criticizing the individual words? The real humor comes from George's character; the words are icing, like rhymes in a poem. It's like criticizing Shakespeare

If I profane with my unworthiest hand ?
This holy shrine, the gentle fine is this:
My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand
To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss.

Oh, Shakespeare, I guess you noticed that this rhymes with kiss. Yeah, that's a real genius of you.

It just keeps continuing, with him pointing out a joke that's not really the joke, and not commenting on the real one. He's completely on the wrong page. He must be critiquing the dialogue in terms of word play because that's what he wants, but the dialogue is not funny because it could have come from the Algonquin round table, but because it's true to character.
