As if E. Honda or Dhalsim would be any more desirable. I don't even want to imagine the type of Dhalsim yaoi that must exist.

One thing that gets me about the "I'm shocked a game that's more than five years old could possibly be any good!" comments is they say it for
every port/Virtual Console release. How often does anyone say "It's crap, but it's also old, so no surprise there", anyway? You'd think
they'd catch on to something after a while, but since they are making those comments in the first place, can't expect too much critical thinking from
these people.

Releasing old games is a ruse. The companies release these games to show gamers how bad games used to be in the past, thereby convincing gamers to buy more
modern games at 50 bucks a pop.

To attempt a serious answer, I guess it's that whenever there is a game that someone dislikes, they explain their dislike by falling back on the reason
that it's old. Like, I don't like Bonk's Adventure, so I'm supposed to think that's because it's old. Of course, my interpretation is
that the game was never that good.
And since an 8/10 is the most commonly awarded score, many games get a high score that shouldn't have. That's true of the present at least as much as it is true of the past. But most "professionals" have no ability to step outside of themselves and see that they are overrating games even as we speak, but sometimes even a "professional" game reviewer can have enough of a modicum of perspective to see that an older game was overrated. Of course, they then misinterpret that, but what can you do? "My feelings hurt, but you know I overcome the pain

i heard of newer games (in the past) being released with "deus ex" stuck to it as bonus, and some deus ex fannies saying they bought the newer game
just to get a legal copy of deus ex. that's another shooter game people still seem to like.

i've been challenged in game plots before in that they've made me think about things in ways i wouldn't have normally. the biggest one that comes to mind is final fantasy 7. the whole fucking w/ genetics plotline was something i never thought about, really. Why did this guy even say that? Obviously Final Fantasy 7 is one of the best-selling games of all time, so it's not like it's something we would have just forgotten about. Therefore, if you're gonna mention FF7, you shouldn't mention it just to toss it out there ('cause it already is out there), but should elaborate a little on what you mean. And "fucking with genetics" isn't even a sentence. So, what made him think differently? He wasn't aware of genetics at all? Has he, like, ever read the news? There also had been stories about man playing god before, like Frankenstein or Jurassic Park. I remember that one time Facility Pro was talking to someone about Metal Gear Solid's story, and the other guy said that it had a challenging story. His argument seemed to boil down to that, before Metal Gear Solid, he never realized that the government could lie about things. Uh, hello?? Do these people even exist in reality? I guess if you're uninformed enough, learning even the most trivial things will seem profound. "My feelings hurt, but you know I overcome the pain

From Wikipedia's article on Aidyn Chronicles:
Aidyn received either panned or mixed critical reviews. Many of the more positive reviews, such as Nintendo Power, cited its creative storyline and strategic combat system. Negative reviews generally complained about its outdated graphics, repetitive musical score, and lack of environment details (IGN/4.2).Uh, I don't think "environmental details" is that game's biggest problem. This goes right back to what I said earlier about how game reviewers will pick the stupidest thing to complain about when confronted with a game that has legitimate problems. If anything, that game actually has a decent variety of environments. I could go on to list them all, but, eh... "My feelings hurt, but you know I overcome the pain

From a review of Gradius V:
It's a seat-of-your-pants side scrolling arcade game that has a deep history to fulfill. What does "deep history to fulfill" even mean? How the hell do you "fulfill" history? If they had said, "history to live up to", it would've made more sense, but it's still a poorly-constructed sentence. The first half is unrelated to the second half. Having a deep history to live up to has nothing to do with being a "seat-of-your-pants" shooter. Pick a thesis and go with it, otherwise you're just saying random crap. And what does "seat of your pants" even mean? Do they actually mean "edge of your seat" or do they mean you'll crap yourself with glee? |

Another thing about Gradius V and "living up to its history"...from what I've played of the Gradius series (though I haven't played as many
as Crawl has, but he seems to agree with me), they don't seem like completely infallible flawless games. There seems to be room for improvements. So if I
had more experience with the series and were to write a review of Gradius V, my thesis wouldn't so much be whether or not it lives up to previous entries
in the series, but whether it goes beyond them.

"Seat of your pants" is a standard expression. Of course, it is a cliche' and a dead metaphor.
One way to tell if a metaphor is dead is if it is an idiom. Sometimes people use cliches' like that while plainly not knowing what they originally meant. Orwell gave the example of "tow the line". "My feelings hurt, but you know I overcome the pain

Some people write "should of". When pronounced aloud, it is indistinguishable from "should've", but you should know that the meaning
is "should have".

It sounds like they confused "history" with "destiny". "Destiny to fulfill" makes more sense grammatically, although I don't
know what a "deep destiny" would be, nor do I know how a non-living object can have a destiny.

If you're worried that videogames get all the fun of having horribly written reviews devoted to them, you can check out this AICN review of Cloverfield:
NOTE: I'm sure that IGN movie reviews are also a source of terrible review writing, but I can't bring myself to read them. I know that they gave Alien vs Predator 2 three-and-a-half stars. I'm sure that's reasonable!
