and I thought Firefox was supposed to block popups |
Lead | ||||

I've been getting a ton of popups the last 2 or 3 days, including one especially lovely one which features cartoon bug porn. That one shows up every 20 minutes or so. I guess they finally figured out a way around Firefox.

FO doesn't like Firefox (we have it downloaded and installed), so we're still using IE.

Try the adblock extension, it can block just about any ad that exists. I like Firefox, and really can't live without tabbed browsing at this point, but there are things about the new version (1.5) that annoy me a bit.

You may have other issues if you keep getting it every 20 minutes....

At least I don't worship a band that wears frilly shirts.
I've only got a couple of Blind Guardian mp3's on my comp. One of them is a cover of Priest's "Beyond the Realms of Death" - Hansi sounds frickin' insane on that one. Caution children! Happy ice cream dancing for you!

...Don't blame everything on Firefox, geez. There are adware and malware that can easily get around your browser. Just because you're getting pop-ups, doesn't mean that Firefox failed in doing what it's supposed to do. In most cases, that just means the user has made some sort of error, not Firefox.
And if you're getting pop-ups that much, I'm quite sure it's not Firefox's fault. Anyway, there's plug-ins for Firefox that make it even more effective at blocking popups. Browsers aren't perfect. People find aways around their security measures. Firefox does have a lot less security holes than IE, though. |

Keep in mind that I'm almost completely computer-ignorant. It's really a wonder that I'm even able to post on a messageboard.

Sounds like Spyware/Adware.
FireFox just blocks the normal ads that pop up from sites (Tripod, for example.) Should probably get Ad-aware SE or something like that for those. And perhaps Norton or any other good Anti-Virus, as some Spyware can give you viruses. What befuddles me is why none of this stuff is for free, as they're all basically required for anyone that has an Internet connection. Seriously, bills for the Cable connection are bad enough as it is. Don't need anymore expenses for the subscriptions for the required programs. ![]() ----------------------------------

I'm afraid, MagnusCrowe, that my post is NOT a joke. In most cases, spyware as bad as that is user error. I mean, no one's perfect. It's hard to tell what a site will try to put on your computer.
But it's true. If you have adware and spyware, Firefox will not protect you. It just protects you from the normal popups you get from sites. Not from popups generated by something else. I work on computers at school and I see this sort of thing all the time. You don't always have to be surfing porn to get this kind of stuff on your computer. |

I heard that the new version of IE will have tabbed browsing. All I'd need aside from that to make me switch back is something like adblock, where you can right click on an ad (flash, banner, or otherwise) and permanently block it. I wonder if something like that already exists for IE? I haven't heard about it.

When I tried using Firefox and coming to this board, the pictures would be all mixed up. Or maybe it was actually the website that was mixed up. Something was.
Oh, and I don't think it looked that way right away. I had to refresh the page or something, and then it would get jumbled up. |

A *good* anti-virus | |||||

"Should probably get Ad-aware SE or something like that for those.
And perhaps Norton or any other good Anti-Virus," Norton is one of the worst possible choices for an anti-virus. Try ClamWin, AVG, or Avast. They are all free for home users, and a great deal more effective than Norton, Symantec, TrendMicro, and the other popular for-fee AV packages. I make my daily bucks keeping Windows PCs working and virus-free. You just got $240 worth of consulting for free. You're welcome. |

So, telling people that Norton is shit is your job? I hope that someday you're not obsoleted by...oh, say, Google. Then you'd have to work a real job like the rest of us for your daily bucks and actually find out what it's like.

Why does it seem like whenever an old topic is bumped, there's about a 50/50 chance that a Brigade Delbrack "sucks" post will be in it?

This is some sort of bizarre prank. I just found someone with the same username on a website accusing us of being a malicious community and making phishing attacks. I believe this could either be (a) because of a recent jab at the Game Pond I made in a throwaway joke in Part 3 of the Great Forum Wars, or (b) a post I made at DH's board explaining why I don't like Myspace.
Also, anyone with a domain, I hope you registered it privately because they're running a WHOIS on it, and I can't imagine any reason to do that other than to try to find your address.

Dear Myspace users:
Most of us in this "malicious" little community have been on the internet since 1998 (notice that's when the board was founded, as per the info box on the main forums page.) What that means is that by now most of us are in our 20's, if not our 30's, and therefore it is a waste of your time to be looking up our addresses as we will not satisfy your pedophilic needs. Thank you and have a pleasant tomorrow. Sincerely, James FP and the little man who lives in his saltshaker (THAT YOU PEOPLE ALL KNOW IS THERE BUT KEEP DENYING IT!!!) ---------------------------------------- Dear FO, Can I please, please, please, please, please have the URL? Pretty please? Uh-oh. James is ticked off now. Stand back...HE'S A NUT!! |

Re: and I thought Firefox was supposed to block popups | |||||

As much as I'd love to, James, I'm sure what will happen is that you'll go there and make a post that we'll all find hilarious and probably wouldn't be offensive to any normal human being, but they'll immediately convulse into their customary, "OMG!! LOOK!! SEE! SEEE! SEEEEE!!! They REALLY ARE mean and harass us all the time! BLAH BLAH! WHINE!" knee-jerk reaction.
Oh-ho-ho-ho! The irony! I just found out the website the accuser is posting at is a webcomic! Coincidence?
