Okay. I understand that the webmaster (or one of the webmasters) here doesn't like River City Ransom. Yet, he seems to like Bubsy (the freaking Bobcat). How freaking lame can you get?

It's an opinion. I think FO gave good reasons for not liking RCR. Besides, EVERYBODY has at least one game they don't like that is considered a good game by practically everyone else.

Hello, young Johnny. I believe that Johnny here needs some sort of lesson in learning to live with other people's opinions. Personally, I think the new and upcoming movie "Crossroads" staring Britney Spears is going to suck, I have no desire to see it, she sings like shit, and I have no care whatsoever about it. Now, young Johnny, I have a friend. This friend has very poor taste until I influence him into something halfway good. He wants to see the movie. (He being the pervert he is, probably just because of Britney being in it.) But, I tollerate it.
End of story, shame on you, do it again and I'll make you listen to "Bye Bye Bye", you're a bad boy Johnny, go shit yourself, the end.

Yeah, but Bubsy? He sucks (so does all three of his games). I posted this comment before, but I'm not sure where it went. I also happen to believe that Linkin Park sucks and that alternative music is merely an alternative to good music. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I'm not bashing the webmaster, I'm just questioning his tastes. No need to misinterpret me.

My question is, would anyone give a flying fart about Bubsy or what anyone thinks of Bubsy games if it weren't for EGM's article? Sort of like how it's become a fad lately to talk about how "bad" the Atari 2600 ET game was, despite the fact that before that article, hardly anybody ever heard of or cared about it. As much as I'd like to discuss why I thought River City Ransom was an average game that I did not enjoy, and my experiences with the only Bubsy game I've ever played, I'd rather do it after people stop worshipping EGM and/or Seanbaby as the Bible of video games.

I think the consensus opinion on games is never to be trusted. Look at some popular playstation games: Final Fantasy 7, merely average. Metal Gear Solid, below average. Lunar: SSSC - one of the worst games I've ever played, derivative and mindcrushingly tedious.
I think the reason so many games are overrated is because people usually like just about *anything*. Scores on review sites like gamefaqs bear this out - a study of 1000+ reviews there showed that 8.5 is the most common average score for a game. In the unlikely event that people do dislike a game, usually it's for totally random, personal reasons (someone who dislikes Super Punchout because King Hippo isn't in it), or because of the joy of collective bashing. Very, very rarely a game will get a bad reputation for actually being bad (eg, Sword of Sodan). Even then, some really, really bad games *still* have a following! (Ikari Warriors and Gauntlet on the NES) I mentioned Lunar earlier in this post. One thing that stuck me about Lunar reviews is that, while they are invariably postive, they never, NEVER, make the game sound exciting - or, for that matter, even good. It always sounds like there's some badness lurking under the surface that the reviewer doesn't either want to acknowledge or wants to mitigate. FO's River City Ransom, review on the other hand. It points out that the game is about as long as a single Super Mario Bros. world. It points out that, rather than having good aspects of RPGs, like exploring or puzzle solving, it has the most tedious aspect of RPGs, stat building. And while the game has many, many moves, you can beat the game using only a few. Contrast that with Punchout, a great game, which only has a few moves but uses all of them to the game's utmost advantage. My point being, an extremely strong case has been made against RCR (unlike some reviews that try to back up an opinion but feel unconvincing). Shorter than a world of SMB? Tedium? This game sounds horrible!! I think the score of 5.5 was generous to tell you the honest truth. And if RCR is popular, my answer is, so what? Like I said, people like just about everything. As for Bubsy, I'm not sure where you heard her say she liked it. I've seen her play it, and seem to enjoy, but I have a feeling she wouldn't feel much of a need to defend it because, while she seemed to enjoy it, I don't think she *loves* it. I wouldn't expect to see her give it some insanely high score like 8.5 any time soon. Crawl and 1000 |

I stopped buying EGM because they keep advertising games that never make it to the US. I don't know why the hell they always have a big section in their magazine that covers Japanese only games. Why should I give a shit about games I'm never going to get a chance to play?
For the record, I actually liked Bubsy for the SNES. The game does have some flaws, like Bubsy dies way too easily, but I still had fun playing it. I agree with Crawl that a lot of people tend to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to whether or not a game is "cool." *cough* Mortal Kombat*cough* I also thought FF7 was merely average as well. It isn't a bad game, but I fail to see what is so great about it. ![]() |

Oh, and Viper, I think Britney Spears is cute. I'm probably going to see the movie for the same reason as your friend.

First of all, I don't base my opinions on whatever is said by some videogame rag or some internet freak who looks like a fag. In fact, I happen to find that Snake's Revenge is very decent game on it's own even though it seems to be universally lambasted by the print media (hello OPM) and internet drones alike, which is quite ironic since Snake's Revenge is what inspired Kojima to make the actual Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for the MSX2 in the first place and Metal Gear Solid is pretty much a 32-bit remake of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I also happen to disagree with CRAWLand1000 that Metal Gear Solid is below average too, although that's my opinion.
I merely assume that Omelette liked Bubsy since one of the site's buttons has Bubsy in it. Having played all three Bubsy games, I have to say that Bubsy as both: a videogame character and a videogame series. Maybe we should all agree to disagree. BTW, I happen to be a complete Kunio zealot, which is why I posted this in the first place. If you don't like River City Ransom, you might want to try Shodai Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun (a game I'm currently co-translating with somebody else). The areas in that game is generally longer than the ones in RCR and there is a stronger emphasis on the game's storyline. Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki (aka Technos Samurai in the translation scene) is alot like River City Ransom, but the game is much longer and has free-roaming areas (although you might be turned off by the game's non-linearity). Kunio-tachi no Banka is a cool beat-em-up that is very story-heavy, although it lacks the RPG elements from the other games. |

Quote: Well assume means ass out of u and me. Just because someone has a button on their site doesn't mean they like the game. Maybe FO just happened to find a sprite of Bubsy somewhere and decided to use it since it's easier than getting sprites off roms. ![]() |

Ryan, I'm dissapointed in you. Hell, I'm dissapointed that the movie's being released, let alone that people are going to it.
And Johnny? I don't even care. Lots of people don't like Linkin Park. I've learned to live with it. "In the end, it doesn't even matter." (In the End/Linkin Park)

LOL! Well, you haven't really made a bad impression on me. And I apologize if I seemed too snappy or for assuming you got your opinions from EGM or Seanbaby. Anyway, I always welcome constructive criticism of my reviews. =)
BTw, I did make that sprite of Bubsy, myself. In fact, I made all the sprites on my site except the one of Amakusa. (Well, "made" as in "captured them in screenshots from a ROM, and then crop and add transparency".) I don't really remember why I chose to use the sprites that I did for the buttons, though. ![]() I Crawl and 1000 ![]()
