For some reason, I took a look at Loogaroo's message board the other day. When I disagree with that guy, I usually don't just disagree, but find his opinions inconceivable. He mentioned that Chrono Trigger's soundtrack sucks compared to Final Fantasy 6, and that CT only has 3 good songs.
That's an opinion that's just incomprehensible to me. I can imagine different people having different opinions on the merits of FF6's and CT's soundtrack. Personally, I think I like CT's more. I don't really want to argue that point, though.
But I went through CT's soundtrack, and I think at least these are stand out songs:
Chrono Trigger (Introduction)
Gonzalez's Song (Gato)
Courage and Pride (Castle)
Kaeru's Theme (Frog)
Fanfare 1
The Day the World Revived
Robo's Theme
Battle With Magus
Corridors of Time (Zeal)
Last Battle
To Far Away Times (Ending)
Obviously, "stand out" has some subjectivity to it. Even I might change my mind on what I'd name from time to time. For instance, in a different mood, I have added Wings that Cross Time (the airship theme). Hell, I probably should have.
For Final Fantasy 6, just for the heck of it, I'd name these themes as possible stand outs:
Opening 1 (Title)
Opening 3 (Journey in the Snow)
Shadow (and the part of the ending that reprises this)
Cayenne (Cyan)
Wild West
Decisive Battle
Tina (Terra)
Forever Rachel
Slam Shuffle
Searching For Friends
Dancing Mad (Part 1)
Dancing Man (Part 3)
Actually, there's a similar number.
Both soundtracks, incidentally, have a weak song in a keystone position: Their normal battle music. That's a pretty common flaw.
I guess what makes me like CT's soundtrack more is that if I'd pick a song at random that is NOT one of those standouts, I'd be more likely to still like it than a similarly chosen FF6 song.
Peaceful Day? A nice little song.
Burn! Bobonga! ? Catchy, usual, and fits that part of the game.
FO yesterday or the day before mentioned her favorite CT song, and I guess I was a bit surprised by it (I don't even remember it know -- Sara/Schala's theme?), and she asked if I was surprised. It's possible that that's another really good song that I've just overlooked somehow.
