Yes. In my opinion anyway. Seems to me that so many people think FF7 is the greatest FF of them all because FF7 was the first FF for many. So they play that, thing it's so awesome, and don't bother to play any of the "old" SNES ones. Thus, the contest isn't even fair.

And that is why FF7 is overrated.

And I don't wanna see anyone saying "every FF is overrated" -_-

I thought of this post when I saw the poll on gamefaqs for today. They've had that poll before, and FF7 is ALWAYS voted for as the favorite FF by a large margin.

I think FFX is. It was the only FF I played that I just flat out didn't like.

I think of all the PSX FF's, only IX has aged all that well, but I really enjoyed both VII and VIII when they came out.

I was thinking this the other day when Filter on G4 ranked FF7 as the best FF ever. I wanted to kill someone. I always tell my FF7-fanboy friend that I thought FF7 was a horrible, horrible game. While most of that is true, it was alright for the 30 hours I played it.

Oh, I loved FFX.

I'd actually say FFX is a little underrated in comparison, not counting the perfect score reviews written right after the game was released (including mine!). But in terms of support from message board users and such, it doesn't seem to have nearly the following that FF7 does... and I felt it was a better game.

And FF7 itself... it is overrated to some extent, of course. You know automatically that it'll win any poll it's included in. It'd probably even win best FPS if someone included it

But I think it was a highly enjoyable RPG that pulled off some amazing things visually (including the best overworld map of all the 3D titles I think).

Gameplay was pretty good, just a more simplified FF6 system, and the story was quite enteraining despite what seem like translation problems.

And I wouldn't be CB007 without it

Well, let's just say that the last couple Final Fantasy games I've played were numbers II and III. (S-NES) As for the PSX ones? I stopped buying the more recent ones. Though, I did play through FFVII when I finally obtained a good set of discs. (Never replayed, though.)

Yes, I'd have to say Final Fantasy 7 is the most overrated of the series, and it's for the exact same reason Shykid mentioned in her post. This may sound incredibly arrogant, but it's still true: If FF7 is the first game you respected in the series, you are not qualified to judge the series.

I always have to wonder about people that hate early entries in a series but love a late one. Surely they realize that without the early games in the series, the later ones would never exist? (I suppose those people'd try to dismiss that issue as irrelevant, but of course it's not) I'd ask this question of myself, but I can't think of any series where this would apply to me. I think Castlevania III is better than Castlevania 1 or 2, but I still like Castlevania 1 and 2.

As I said in a topic on another forum here, I liked FF7 and thought it was okay, but if it was the best Playstation game, the Playstation would be in trouble, especially considering it's just a slightly-downgraded version of FF6 with flashier graphics (though the music isn't even as good).

I'd ask this question of myself, but I can't think of any series where this would apply to me.

I may have thought of one: Street Fighter. I've never played Street Fighter 1, but by most accounts it's horrible.

I can think of a few reasons this might be an exception. For one, while Street Fighter 2 inventing fighting games as we now know them, fighting games did exist before... and did, in fact, exist even before Street Fighter 1 (such as Yie Ar Kung Fu). Thus, even if you value the progression of games and game ideas, you don't necessarily have to give much, if any credit, to Street Fighter 1.

I think another reason FF7 gets so much praise is because it was the first FF to have FMVs. And you go from FF6's 16-bit graphics to the "omg-this-is-fscking-amazing" FMVs. Although, to me, 16-bit graphics are the most beautiful graphics ever :p And the only thing better is 32-bit graphics that look a lot like 16-bit graphics XD I dunno why, but I just love 16-bit stuff. It looks so... cartoony and fun.

I haven't played FFX, so I can't judge it. But I did watch my brother play FFX-2, and I have to say that it's... really corny.

Of course, my favorite FF of all time will always be FF4 :p It IS the first FF I ever played (back when I was 8), and I've played through it more than any other Final Fantasy. FF5 coems at a close second because of the job system and the fact that the game has a lot more (in terms of story and just the game in general) than FF4. But I still love FF4 most of them all. Maybe it's because it's the first one I played XD

I did go back and play FF1, though. It was okay. I haven't bothered to play FF2j, and I really really wish they would rerelease FF3j.

As for this problem with playing the later ones in the series first, I have the same problem with the Mega Man series. I didn't really start playing Mega Man until Mega Man 7. I don't think the ones before it suck, though. In fact, I'm the one that sucks at them ;_; But I still respect them for being generally cool games.

Any game that's hailed as a gift from God by 95% of the people who've played it is automatically overrated in my book, since, obviously, no game is a gift from God. Exactly how overrated is something I can't determine until I've played it. I do seriously doubt FF7 is going to beat FF6 as my favorite Final Fantasy.

Well, you can't blame everyone of the people Shykid mentioned. Most of them began getting into gaming in the PSX era. Since they didn't grow up with classic gaming, they have little or no enthusiasm for classic gaming, so they wouldn't be capable of judging previous FF's the way we would like them to.

I feel the need to comment here. I played every FF game in the main series in order (sans FF9, I never got to that one), and FF7 still stands out as my favorite. It was the first game I even considered preordering, and I've beaten it more times than any game other than Chrono Trigger (which will always be my favorite game).

I see no problem with FMVs being used. Granted, repeated uses of the summons in the game can lead to them getting old, but most of the time the summons don't even do enough damage to warrant using them, period. Square had just got a new studio and fresh new equipment, and they were probably itching to use it. I know I would be if I were trying to make a breakthrough RPG (especially if it's the first appearance of a great series on the most successful system on the market).

I don't see how the translation really affected the plot in any way. Other than some grammar problems and some nonsensical (and unimportant, plot-wise) dialogue near the start of the game, I've never had trouble understanding the plot. The only thing I didn't like plot-wise was the ending, and I hope they clear that up with Advent Children.

So I guess I'm a fanboy. I dunno. I just know that I enjoy the game more than any other in the series, and not just because of the FMVs. I love the plot, the characters all have their own entertaining quirks, the music is elegant in its simplicity, and I find the materia system to be just the right balance between being too complex and too simple.

Second best game of all time, behind Chrono Trigger, in my opinion.

That's certainly true. The job system was an interesting addition, but everything else was average or worse. The game was almost nothing like FFX, really.

I certainly would've much preferred a serious continuation of FFX's storyline with the same battle system, and the same or a slightly revised Sphere Grid instead of going back to old fashioned level ups.

Bah. I don't see how having an opinion makes someone a "fanboy". I only associate "fanboy" with people who find it necessary to flame in pidgeon-English.

I'm one of the few people who likes FF8 more than 7. Ironically, despite my internet names and avatars, I think FF6 is a bit overrated. But then again, I think Chrono Trigger is overrated, too. Maybe I think too many things are overrated.

Answer: Yes

Of course I'm going to go into detail here.
First my story: When the playstation came out i didn't want it. I was a teenaged Nintendo loyalist at the time. Nothing could convince me to buy that thing.. I heard FF7 was coming out only on playstation and i cringed. My stupid nintendo loyalty was playing against me. It wasn't until I went over a friends house to actually play the playstation that i realized an important thing: system loyalty is for retards. Only fun matters (and price. I damn well can't afford a PS3!!!!). I still did'nt buy a PS1 because of all the glitch problems the first generation of playstations were having, and I really didn't want to own any of the games that were out. A year or two later I went over a co-workers house who actually owned FF7. He showed me a couple of summons and a few fights and I was convinced: I would buy a playstation JUST for this game alone.

Now you see how I set myself up for dissapointment. But not without reason. I hoped that FF3 would be better than FF2 (FF4 and 6 in the original US. releases) and It was.Considering how much I loved final fantasy 2, I could not fathom that FF3 was even better! Amazing!

Final Fantasy 7 was.......average....just there....no big deal.

A lot of people thought otherwise.

It was then that I came to another realization: people like "shiny and pretty". The FACT that the story, gameplay, play control are average, suck, or downright make you want to kill your momma can all be overlooked by many if the game is "shiny and pretty". For a lot of people THIS was their first FF game. Polygon graphics were the new sensation. And It had a blitzing ad campaign like no other FF before it. The game though was just alright-the graphics were great for the time. I thoroughly believe that if FF6 were released at the same time, with a similar graphics engine, it would have been considered much better by comparison(also with more memory I'm sure ff6's story would have been expanded also and other things expanded).

Anyway...that's the story. Heres what that game had that were thought of as VIRTUES, that I thought were OVERRATED.

1. Sephiroth
WTF is sooooo appealing about this guy. TELL ME IF I'M WRONG, pretty much every scene he's in, he magically appears, kills a couple people , says some crap that makes no sense to anybody and disappears. Am I right? YEP.Yet people loved this villian.HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! Actually he was a generic archetype that had been used in videogames, books, or what -have- you before. It's as if everybody who boasts about this characters originality and coolness has never read FICTION before.

2. Cloud
*sigh* guy with a mysterious past who thinks we doesn't have enough power to protect the people he cares about most, so he shuts everyone out as not to hurt them.. BORRRRRRINNGGGGGG. See the Sephiroth comment above to see how cookie-cutter this character is. The only way they could have made it more generic is if he was an orphan from a small village...oh wait, they did.

Pretty much every character was a generic archetype. Now, not that archetypes are bad. This just plays into the "overrated" theme. These guys are toated as the "best" insome circles, when in fact they're the "norm".

3. Challenge
If you die fighting a regular team of enemies, tell me how. As soon as you get summon monsters, game over. You destroy everything in your path no problem.Just push a button and wait twenty minutes while your moster takes out all the guess work. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Oh... and The reward for beating the toughest "X-tra" boss in the game? A GOLD CHOCOBO! umm....to get the item you need to defeat that boss, so need a gold chocobo in the first place. Stupid.

4. Story
I just found it boring. That's personal. But nothing excited me. Couple things of note: Why was AVALANCHE so sure that SHINRA'S Mako reactors were killing the world? Nothing was ever said as to evidence that the world was about to die, just they way all of SHINRA treated people seemed to be the problem. I didn't get the hurray ECO-Terroist theme. They all just seemed to know Mako energy was the world's life blood, but HOW they knew was never answered.

Now reading all this remember, I don't hate ff7. If I could afford a PS3, I'd get that remake that's coming out. But by far, in my opinion, it is without a doubt the most overrated ff if not the most overrated game of all time.
