Dracula in Castlevania 1 and The Great Commander's R.O.B. form in Star Fox. I have never gotten past either of them.

Giygas in Earthbound was really difficult for me the first time I got to him. Even after I knew what to do to finish his final form, I couldn't keep everyone alive. My levels were way too low when I got there, but I still managed to beat him. That's part of the reason I take my time with that game when I replay it. I want to make sure my levels are a little higher than they were the first time I got there so I don't have THAT much trouble with him.

The Albatross in the Game Boy Bionic Commando gave me a run for my money (NES Albatross was pathetic).

Lashiec in Phantasy Star IV is a pain in the butt (although he's the pinnacle of the game's difficulty)

While the Profound Darkness of PSIV can be done hanging upside down with Raja and Hahn, it's probably hell to do with Gryz.

Algernon in Breath of Fire 2 and Smithy in Super Mario RPG are the two fucking hardest RPG bosses I've ever seen. I never had to level up for a boss like I did for Algernon and even 10-15 levels later, I still just barely got by him and his ever-regenerating body parts.

And you can't level up for Smithy if you've already hit the level cap. I must've used almost all of my remaining items on that dude.

Does anyone here who beat Vagrant Story have a Dex Drive?

I could try to upload my save before the final boss, that'd let you experience fighting him the way I fought him my first time through the game. I think that would be a good challenge.

I used to think that ErniePants was FO but now that he/she's used the F-word I am second-guessing myself.

I would say Rowd from the beginning of Suikoden 2 is pretty dang tough.

That wouldn't prove anything anyway. I've used the f-word, too. I don't use it that often, but just look at the "Who was it who said..." topic.

Then again, I remember a time when I thought ErniePants was a joke account of either James, Ash35, or NextBillGates, but that doesn't appear to be true.

Maybe I can understand why someone would think ErniePants is a joke account, but why would you think he's FO of all people?

Nope, ErniePants isn't me, or Ash35, or NBG. He's one of the "lamers" from the N-Sider Pokemon BBS. There were a bunch of people on that board (including myself) that were always posting nonsense and flooding (although I didn't flood, I just did the nonsense part of it.) ErniePants showed up out of the blue one day and posted a "Rules of the BBS", which elicited a lot of funny replies. The only joke accounts I'm aware of that Ash35 and NBG had were Janspork and N64suxbigtime, but they both openly admitted to being them. The only joke accounts I can remember having are Giant Banana and Sailor James.

Anyway, this got WAY off-topic, sorry about that.

My favorite tough game bosses are the Great Commander (both forms really, though R.O.B. is harder) in Star Fox, Bongo Bongo in Ocarina of Time, Deathevan in Breath of Fire 2 (who I think is much harder than Algernon), and Raphael the Raven from Yoshi's Island. I also liked Raglan, the final boss of Skyblazer. I always forget how to beat him when I get to him. I don't know why I can never remember that strategy. Once I figure it out, though, he's not that hard.

Some of the bosses in Star Fox 64 still give me a hard time, too, like that damned submarine level boss and the one that has Slippy captured. Also, Plasma Hydra and Metal Smasher of Star Fox 1 are pretty damn tough, as well as Andross on Path 3.

Snooze Alarm

The hardest RPG bosses I've ever beaten are the Succubus Queen in Might & Magic, Virgil in SaGa Frontier, and Doth in Paladin's Quest. Strangely, none of them are a final boss.

I agree with Raphael the Raven in Yoshi's Island, and Baby Bowser was tough, too. I liked almost all of that game's boss fights. Star Fox, don't get me started on. I never got past the Spinning Core on Path 3.

And I still can't beat the Flying Fortress in Rambo. I wonder if it's actually possible without cheating.

smithy? i would say Culex. it took me a looong time to actually kill him, but after that i only did it for the groovy FF4 battle music and that he was a pretty awsome boss

yeah, so far i havent beat the ultimate demon without the use of a game genie -_-;;;

I can't seem to remember anything specific for some reason. I agree that Culex was considerably difficult. Can't remember how I was leveled when I fought him, though.

A lot of the bosses in the Dragon Warrior series are challening, too. They often seem to depend a lot on luck, though. Sometimes a boss will hit for about 20 HP, and the next time he does the attack, it takes off 70HP, destroying one of your characters. That was especially annoying in the first game, since you had no party members to help out. And leveling wouldn't always take care of that.

In DW1, fighting the Green Dragon, Axe Knight, or Dragonlord while even a little underleveled, or with a little bad luck, could be really tough. But that goes for some of the random enemies in that game too, some of which could be as tough as the bosses.

The other DW games I don't remember as clearly, but you often had to fight bosses after a long dungeon with no health or magic restoration. Made them even more difficult.

ah, i remember DWIII...i think my cartridge stopped working, it sorta just up and quit on me...and it was one of my fav games to!

lvl for Culex? the reccomended is about 25 or so, i never ever bothered to actually go and train in that game, probably the one RPG that i didnt (and i cant remember my actuall level either, but it was around that, and all you need is a good strategy involving the lazy shells really) and he was so friggin hard because he had 4000-5000 HP, according to the guide book, and smithy only had a MAX of 1000-3000 per head (depending which one), witch was pretty easy to do with some of them (and he only had 2 of him, and there were 5 enemies to Culex, although the green crystal had veeery low HP, but super painfull magic)

I remember when somebody thought I was FO for some strange reason, but I digress...

Toughest boss, eh? Well, lemme think... Goenitz from "KOF '96" is unbearably cheap. Also, the last boss of "Doom 64", but only because you had to fight off a hoard of demons all at the same time before you could fight it.

I think M. Bison in the original Street Fighter 2 was really tough, unless you cheesed with Blanka's strong kicks.

The Magi Master in Final Fantasy 6 is another tough boss. It must've taken me about 30 tries to beat him. I also had a really hard time with Lavos in Chrono Trigger when I first got to him. I might've been underleveled. I had the most trouble with the first phase where he mimics all the other bosses in the game, and the final phase, when he's a duck in an alien suit.

Round up the pizza delivery boys... We're going in!!

Blu Boltar in Little Ninja Brothers is a really tough boss for me to beat. I think I tend to overlevel a bit for him now, because I had such a hard time with him the first time I played through the game. The problem is that he's able to stun both of your party members and then deal heavy damage, then stun them again. The first boss of that game, Tub-a-Tummy, is also a major pain in the butt, because he can cause instant death if he turns you into a hamburger and then steps on you.

Goragora, the final boss of Magic of Scheherazade, is a little scary, too. Heck, it took me about 50 tries before I even figure out HOW to damage him, and it's still tough to get him before he inhales you (which immediately discards you from the battle and the maze.)

took me more live 5 before i killed him....then he took me out with Ultima! grr *kicks magi-master's dead corpse* and then i remembered...DUH! Reflect rings and Life3 :ahem

that reminds me, has anyone done much with that new FF6 retranslation? im so far to the floating continent

so far i dont think that ive TRIED Lavos without at least ooone little gamegenie cheat so that my lead character wont die, i think last time i tried it that second form (that looks like Cell from DBZ with arms comming out of his head. and yes i know that akira designed both of them) killed me with those chest lasers pretty fast (maybe because i used Lucca, Marle, and good ol' Magus for the sole reason of the Tripple Tech, maybe Chrono could beat him)

Last time I played Chrono Trigger, I had trouble with Lavos at first. I think it was a problem with low magic defense or something, and the characters could hardly take any of his attacks... I went up a handful of levels, but not dozens or anything... and noticed a huge decrease in difficulty.

It's interesting to beat Magimaster by using Beserk on him and then draining all of his MP... takes a while, though.
