I hope this gets resolved... |

I got Fire Emblem today, preowned, from the EBGames sale. To make a long story short, the cartridge label was a fake, and the game was actually Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure. Whether this gets resolved quickly and easily... or not, will determine if I shop from ebgames.com again or switch to gamestop.com for good.

Is this for Super Nintendo or Game Boy Advance? Because I had no idea they released The Mayan Adventure for GBA.

It's for the GBA. There was a Pitfall game released for it:

Yet another reason I don't buy used games if I can find a new copy. Plus, now you can't even buy GBA games off of eBay because pirated GB cartridges run rampant there.

It's a real shame. It's because of stuff like this that you practically have to get any Game Boy games you want as soon as they come out. Wait around for a preowned copy and you won't get a box or manual and you may not even get the right game, or you'll get a pirated copy.

Quote: Well, one good thing happened, which is that I received a box AND instructions for FF Tactics Advance, and received the box for Mario & Luigi. Was told I wouldn't be getting anything at all, so it was a nice surprise. Regarding Fire Emblem, I guess I've just gotta wait for ebgames to respond to my e-mail. I wonder if I'll have to send that Pitfall game back to them or not... they'd better pay the shipping if I do. "I will do this. Nothing in my life matters except this. They'll send me a pre-paid envelope to exchange this game for another Fire Emblem or a refund. Kinda time consuming...

Quote: Still, this thing was obviously screwed up. The label was almost completely off the cartridge when I got it. I know it's not a really big deal, I probably wouldn't have time to play it for a long time anyway. It's just that I've never had anything quite like that happen before. "I will do this. Well, at least it happened with Ebgames and not some crooked ebay seller who'd take your money and run.

It seems like this was a somewhat common scam during the NES era. In fact, the site MYG got his Devo version of Mega Man from had a person recounting a scam like this.

A week or so later, and still no sign of my pre-paid envelope. I am NOT paying shipping for this.

The only GBA game I ever got used was Namco Museum, and I actually found that in a Wal-Mart shopping cart. Must've fallen out of some kid's pocket. The rest, all purchased new, although my Mega Man Battle Network and Prince of Persia were the Gamestop "display" copies.
I almost got Advance Wars for free, because the dude forgot to ring it up. But I felt guilty as hell, plus it wasn't a store like Gamestop where I've gotten screwed over a couple of times (plus, I actually paid something for that Harvest Moon 64), and we were still in the mall, so I went back and made him ring it up. I also have very few used GCN games. PN03 is the only one I can name off the top of my head, and it actually might be the only GCN game I got used. However, 10 of my 23 PS2 games were bought used. Heh. It turns out that the envelope was supposed to be sent, but wasn't. The e-mail said that another envelope would be requested and sent to me. I wonder if that Pitfall game is even worth the price of the postage for the envelope they're sending.

Got the envelope today, requesting refund check instead of exchange. I'm afraid they'll say the price of Fire Emblem has gone up and try to charge something.

Prices don't usually go up on games anymore. You should email them again.

I already sent the game back. It's just that on the form, if you want an exchange, it says you have to provide credit card info in case the exchanged game costs more than the return. Sounds stupid of me, but I just didn't want to do that.
I don't even care much about Fire Emblem anymore, anyway. "I will do this. Nothing in my life matters except this. No moment in my life exists except this moment. I am born in this moment, and if I fail, I will die in this moment. - Raistlin |

Quote: Well, if you decide you still want to get the game, Toys 'R' Us has it marked down. From what I hear the price ranges from about $10 to $20 depending on the actual store location, but I was able to get a copy for ~$13. -'Tamer

I had this situation happen to me twice, and I'm not sure either was a scam, and I ran into it once when managing a FuncoLand back in '99. I bought a
Shooting Gallery cart for Master System that actually turned out to be OutRun, and when I bought World Heroes for SNES it turned out to be Out of This World.
Weird thing is, neither of those were a case in which the actual game would have been the less expensive. At Funco, though, I caught a guy trying to trade in a
Donkey Kong Country 3 (which fetched a decent price at the time) that actually contained Street Fighter 2. At that time, at least, when FuncoLand was its own
company, it was policy to test literally every single game and component we bought in, and we caught a lot of defects and switcheroos by following it.
