Strangely enough, we went to see Minority Report. FO wanted me to check what time the movie started, so I looked it up online. 2:20. We left in time to get there early... when we discovered that the movie actually was only playing once today, at 9:05. Signs started at 2:00, though, so we saw that instead. Which is quite interesting, because one of the ideas of the movie is that there are no coincidences, but everything happens for a reason.
Anyway, I liked the movie. I'd say I liked it more than Unbreakable. I don't know whether I like it more than The Sixth Sense, though. The final plot twist in that movie really did sort of knock me out. Signs is similar to those movies in that the finale of the movie ties together a lot of things, many of which seemed insignificant earlier, with rigorous logic, and sort of forces a re-evaluation of the entire movie. One of the foreshadowed elements, however, doesn't really arise naturally. It's just sort of thrown out as dialogue that seems to have little basis, which diminishes the surprise that piece of the puzzle could have had. The significance of that is debatable, though, since the movie can be interpreted at least one way other than what literally happens in the plot.
Speaking of which, while a lot of games have tried to be "cinematic", I think most have ended up just being hollow imitations of the movies that inspired them. However, Vagrant Story's story does remind me of an M. Night Shyamalan type of story. It has a final shocking plot twist that is in fact heavily foreshadowed and carried through with rigorous logic. In some ways, the ending to that game was even more dramatic than the Shyamalan movies - the ending to VS knocked me out with revelation while simultaneously confusing me (until I replayed the game I fit it all together)
One thing I hadn't heard about Signs was that it had a light comic tone, despite mainly being a drama (kinda like The Karate Kid II) One of the humorous parts was when we first see the children with aluminum foil hats that make them look like Whos from a Dr. Suess book.
By the way, when we got home, we looked at the internet page I used to check Minority Report's time. It turned out that 2:20 was the movie's running time.
