ActRaiser 2. Terrible control, cheap deaths, and no simulation scenes. I don't think it should've ever seen the light of day. When Soul Blazer first came out, it was rumored to be a sequel to ActRaiser, though its play style is much different, but it still would've been a better sequel than ActRaiser 2 is.

Every Breath of Fire after the first (so far, anyway). They all tried to play up the comedy a little too much for me; I thought it worked better in BoF1, where it was obvious that the game was somewhat lighthearted, but where the designers didn't let that overwhelm the atmosphere or detract from the main story in any way. The later ones all seemed way too bi-polar for me, oscillating between wackiness and all that serious your-destiny-is-to-kill-a-false-god stuff; and the humor wasn't really that funny.
And Lufia 2. Although, based on some earlier conversations here, I'm willing to admit that, by most standards, my esteem for the first Lufia is disproportionate and not totally logical.

Ultima: Warriors of Destiny. I'm not much of an Ultima fan at all, but I do consider Quest for the Avatar decent at least... Warriors was just....Unngh.

Here's the ones I can think of off the top of my head:
Actraiser 2 Blaster Master 2 Journey From Darkness: Strider Returns Contra: Legacy Of War C: The Contra Adventure And remember, a shiny new donkey for whoever brings me the head of Colonel Montoya.

The absolute worst sequel I've ever played was Might & Magic 3: Isles of Terra for the Super NES. Granted, the PC version isn't as agonizingly slow as the SNES version, but I can't imagine being much better besides that. After the beauty that was Might & Magic 1 on the NES, M&M3 has no battle system to speak of. When an enemy appears, you place the cursor over it and mash a button, Swords & Serpents style, only it's even worse than Swords & Serpents. In M&M1, the whole top half of the screen was devoted to your surroundings, but in M&M3, only a small square in the top left corner shows your point of view. There are a million other nitpicks I could discuss, but I'll end this by saying worst of all, the game often crashes and deletes your saved file in the process.
Other game sequels that are not among the worst games I've ever played, but were disappointing: Breath of Fire 2 Star Fox 64 ActRaiser 2 ![]() I Crawl and 1000 ![]()

At first I didn't want to say it because I thought it was too obvious, but... Yoshi's Story.
Not only is it a bad sequel and a bad game, it's like the exact opposite of Yoshi's Island (perhaps a deliberate attempt to piss us off?) Yoshi's Island was a huge, sprawling game. You can (if you've ever played a game before, WILL) beat Yoshi's Story in about an hour of starting it. Yoshi's Island had beautiful, solidly colored hand drawn graphics. Yoshi's Story had blurry computer generated graphics. The wisdom of forcing you to control Yoshi with the analogue stick is dubious. All in all, this is probably the worst game that is in any way featuring, affiliated or descended [which is the word that applies here] from Mario. |

Generation System - Bad Idea | |||||
|
ActRaiser 2's been listed enough.
Phantasy Star III. I realize some people like this game. But there's a trend where people who like this don't like the other Phantasy Stars and vice versa. After playing the joys that were Phantasy Star II and Phantasy Star IV, I was pissed off by this one. There's barely any enemy animation, and whoever thought the Generations system was a good idea is an idiot. The technique distribution is icing on the cake. Lemmings Revolution. All that potential down the pooper thanks to insane difficulty. ![]() |

Just popped in: Street Rod 2.
I was a fan of the original Street Rod (old PC game), and when I saw Street Rod 2, I downloaded it immediately. Sadly the game was far too hard, and I gave pretty soon. |

Yeah, I only enjoyed the original Breath of Fire. The second has an insanely high encounter rate, and the third has too many frustrating parts. I haven't played that much of the fourth.
I'd have to add Double Dragon 3(NES) to the list. Only one life per character? Only five levels? And besides the ninja, all the heroes move too darn slow. I've seen 90 year old women move faster than that Chinese guy. I like nachos.

Yeah, plus the fact that the game tends to force you to do like five minutes of fighting in the same place, then you bypass a huge chunk of the level without seeing any enemies, and end up having to fight in one place for five more minutes. I dunno--hard core Ninja Gaiden fans would probably put Ninja Gaiden III on here, but personally I kind of enjoy the game. I mean, the action is slower and less precision than the first two because of the play control, and the plot doesn't make much sense, but I still kind of enjoy the game. Just not as much as the first two.

Quote: I noticed that too. However, I think technically you can spread the playing field out, but it's much easier to stay in one spot. One nice thing about fighting enemies is the game finally throws mixed bags of enemies at you instead of all Williams, all Loper, all Abobo, etc. I like nachos.

I hate to say this, but Kirby 64. The atmosphere makes the game feel like it's intended for kindergartners, and I felt guilty playing the game at my age. And this is coming from a guy who likes Pokemon and Hamtaro. Plus half of the combo powers are completely useless.
At least one power is similar to Darth Maul's dual lightsabre. Plus the 4 player mini-games are fun. I like nachos.

The only sequel I can think of at the moment that was somewhat disappointing was Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. I still like the game, but I just don't like it as much as the other Zelda games I've played.
It's not a sequel to the Mario Kart games, but I didn't like Diddy Kong Racing, either. --Pepto-Dash!! |

The worst sequel IMO is Mario Kart: Super Circuit. The trouble begins with the name; you know a game series is going downhill when they start using subtitles. But a name doesn't make a game, so if the game were good I could tolerate it. The thing I don't like is how MK:SC traded the gameplay for graphics. Each MK:SC course seems to be begging to be looked at, but are quite mundane when it comes to the course design. Oops. The shortcuts aren't very original either; they all consist of jumping just right after using a mushroom. The Super Mario Kart courses are OK but are now too easy (The MKSC karts are more similar and more control oriented, where the SMK karts were speed oriented) The voices are also annoying, particularly Luigi's (since when was Luigi's voice as high as PEACH's!?). The game's graphics are practically trying to say, "We're showing off GBA's graphical capacity!" and this show-offy, cutesy approach annoys me. The music sucks too. Super Mario Kart was amazing, Mario Kart 64 was a classic, but Super Circuit doesn't make the cut (I don't think Double Dash will either. And if you're going to make subtitles don't make them lame -_-)

I forgot about Blaster Master 2. For that matter, the only Blaster Master sequel I've liked so far is Enemy Below. I admit I haven't played much of Blasting Again, but I didn't like the controls from what I did play.

Breath of Fire 3, Wind Waker, Final Fantasy 9, and Dragon Warrior 7 were some of the worst I can remember right now.

It's sort of funny - I'd probably give Breath of Fire 3 and Wind Waker the same score, but in my memory it sort of seems like Wind Waker was worse. That might just be an effect of my playing (better) Zelda games before Wind Waker, but BoF3 was the first game in that series I played.

Heh. Well, I thought BOF4 was just as bad as BOF3. It's just that I didn't have overly high expectations, so I can't really call it disappointing. More like... just as badly done as I predicted

I agree with Breath of Fire 3. 4 wasn't much better. I just hope Dragon Quarter doesn't disappoint me or I'll never play another BOF game again.
Demon's Crest isn't bad, but I don't really like it as much as the other Gargoyle Quest/GnG games. Seemed too short and too much of a focus on trying to find insanely-hidden places and stuff. R U $ h 1 F 3 ||

Dragon Quarter is like nothing else in the series. At times I liked it, but at other times, it's design seemed ridiculous. I never finished it, but that's pretty common with me anyway.
I'd advise reading up on the gameplay somewhere before actually playing it, so you'll have a better idea what you're doing. Not as easy to pick up and play as most console RPG's. |

Neither was Vagrant Story.
If I ever do get around to playing an RPG for the PS2, It'll probably be Dragon Quarter. |

Re: I LOVE FO! | |||||

Well, the way the game is designed, you'll more likely than not have to replay several hours of it a few times before you can finish the whole thing. And as it doesn't have the greatest battle system in history, that can get pretty boring. I guess the term Survival RPG really is appropriate, though.
It wasn't really that long ago that I played the game, and I wish I could remember more. I know there are regular save points, but for some reason you can't use them freely to try again and again like a normal RPG. And you can, and probably will, get into an impossible situation and have to "Give Up" to restart the game from the beginning with part of your experience points carried over. And maybe spells, too. Dragon Transformation is key to winning major battles, but it's not good for Ryu... and if you do it too much you literally won't be able to finish the game without a restart. |

Zelda: Ocarina of Time was the game that turned me off to Zelda finally. I thought that series could do no wrong and reserved the thing, excited as can be. I
picked it up right away, and then... I was bored. Slow, slow game that I really wanted to like, but in the end just didn't.
ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron Contra Force Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Bushido Blade 2 Chrono Cross Legend of Mana Card Fighter's Clash DS Bubble Bobble 2 for NES (only one player?!) There are a few that off the top of my head kinda burned me. |
