This is a common comparison that I see, and it's not accurate. The Neo Geo AES received new licensed games as recently as 2006, and more than one at that. The Neo Geo was not marketed as a home console to compete with the SNES and Genesis. It was advertised as the Neo Geo Home Rental System, and is even referenced as such in the user's manuals that came with the system and games. The Neo community has consistently supported the full print run of nearly every release for the system. The purpose of the AES was not to compete in the home console market; it was to garner extra revenue to cover the development cost of SNK arcade products, and it did accomplish its goal, though its sales success clearly did not mirror the voluminous numbers that the 16-bit consoles generated. SNK's expectations, though, were to sell by and large 500-1000 carts per game, and did. The PS3 is more akin to something like the 3DO, which was similarly priced at its outset and was also marketed for its multimedia capabilities and system specs that dwarfed the then-relevant SNES and Genesis specs. It's hard to outsell Super Mario World 2 with Who Shot Johnny Rock, though, and that's where the PS3 is also currently hanging.

It's just odd to see people repeatedly compare the PS3 and Neo Geo when the two just weren't intended for the same purposes.

It has to be some sort of casual gaming phenomenon, because there's nothing that's been truly compelling yet... nothing that really made playing with a remote new or exciting. It's been a crappy light gun and mouse combo so far, and the motion sensing has been all but irrelevant, as evidenced by playing Wii Sports Baseball using jerk-off motions instead of baseball motions to great success... and not matter how you flail your arm, Link's sword reacts just as if you'd pushed a button. I can't wait for the new Metroid... moving with a controller in one hand while aiming and shooting with the other... I did that 20 years ago. It was called Gotcha! for the NES. I also played this neat game where you had up-tempo music and had to step on this pad in the order of the directions that appeared on screen, and it had an exercise program... it was called... yeah, Dance Aerobics. Okay, I'm gonna go play Bubble Bobble with a U-Force now.
