I wasn't expecting Square to release any of their high profile RPGs for the VC, seeing as they seemed to prefer porting and remaking them over and over.

I assume, though, that Chrono Trigger DS is a fairly straight port, though. On the other hand, while Final Fantasy 1 has been remade several times, none were
intended to be authentic to the original. So, maybe that could be why Square figures there could be a market for both the original and the remakes.
Also, I think it has been a while since there was a remake. One was for the Playstation 1, and that has obviously been obsolesced. There's also been one for GBA and one for PSP since then, though.

I guess this is just a way for them to port to the Nintendo market. GBA is pretty much gone (I wasn't even aware they had remade it for the system - I
thought it was like FF7 sandwiching remakes but none for itself) and there's a fanbase they aren't reaching current-gen.
Besides, they released their official sequel(s) to FFIV though it; maybe they are starting to realize there's business to be had there. |

The GBA FF1 remake was Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls. I played it and it was stupid-easy, even the bonus content.
I try to stay away from reading comments on more mainstream sites, but I was curious about the reaction to this. Almost every post commenting on the FF1 release was either complaining about how everything before FF6 sucks, complaining about the "stupid" targeting system, or people not knowing a single thing about the game.

It seems like if you want a game to turn into a series, you should just add an ironic "Final" to the name.

I read somewhere that Capcom never planned to make Final Fight sequels, but they were commissioned by Nintendo to make Final Fight 2 in order to compete with
the Streets of Rage series on the Genesis.

And Final Fight 3 was the last one, and that was 14 years ago.
Well, I guess that's not exactly true. "Of the three ways in which men think that they acquire a knowledge of things--authority, reasoning, and experience--only the last is effective and able to bring peace to the intellect." -Roger Bacon |

I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that I should pick up Wii Points when I was out today, but NOOOO, I had to skip it the day when Zombies Ate My
Neighbors came out. My dad and I played that religiously, and we couldn't find it for SNES anywhere other than rental stores.
...Can't think of a better Halloween release outside of the survival horror genre, despite what people here think about it (yeah, the giant baby is ridiculously hard and the chainsaw guys are not much better). That has just about every horror movie monster in it imaginable. Again, at least they're showing creativity in these release dates. Oh yeah, and Golden Axe. Deja vu. --- EDIT: I guess it's worth mentioning. There are only 20 "unreleased" games listed in the Wikipedia page as of this post. That means we'll make it roughly to March of next year if they keep drip-feeding us - and don't get a new batch of ESRB ratings alerts. And aside from 4 or 5 names (Space Invaders? Really?), I'm not seeing a whole lot of exciting releases on this list.

I was almost expecting a military-themed release this week for VC, but looking at the expected 18, there's not a lot of options. You either go with the spy
games, Impossible Mission/Rolling Thunder (which are an awkward fit at best); the flying game with a little military action, Pilotwings (which is a little
better but still off-base); or the "we'll just assume the ship you play as is a metaphor for the Triple Entente" game, Space Invaders (which is
just idiotic).
So no themes for a while, I guess. |
