I think most of those can be gotten on the Sega Genesis Collection anyway. The only exception is probably Gunstar Heroes, and maybe Mean Bean Machine.

Know what Nintendo's weekly release of classic gaming bliss was? Baseball and Urban Champion. You suck, Nintendo.
(Someone theorized that with people buying Wii Points cards for Christmas gifts, Nintendo could get away with putting out shit this week, since people might spend the cards more freely than cash) |

Today's releases were:
Gradius (NES) Soldier Blade (TG16) Dungeon Explorer (TG16) ... Well, it's better than last week. I'm considering Dungeon Explorer. |

I never owned Street Fighter 2, so I'm quite satisfied with my purchase.
I do admit, though, I'm not sure what I want to spend the rest of my points on. It's between SimCity and Super Castlevania 4. Or I hold out for another week or so until some more appear. Also, is it just me, or were the prices much lower around Christmas? I thought the highest price other than SM64 was 600. |

I thought FO did a review of it, but I think that was Castlevania 3 I was thinking of. I also recall red flags about that game for some bizarre reason ("bizarre" because I totally ignored everything after Castlevania II). I also attempted to look up reviews for that game
I always managed to get to metropolis in SimCity. I think I'm just not budgeting right. You get the bank at a time when you're in financial trouble. Maybe that's a sign that you are spending money too fast. I also needed to build more industrial areas (which I never did because of pollution and I still managed to make Metro without any problems... odd). I admit, though, it would be in my best interest to hold out one more week until more pop up. :\ |

With regard to virtual console game prices, since launch of the service, NES prices have been at $5, SNES and Genesis at $8, N64 at $10, and TG16 at $6 (with the exception of R-Type which is higher).

FO never gave SimCity a full review, but she did talk about it on her Overrated Games list.
I'm sure most of the NES games on the Virtual Console could be purchased in their original form for a buck or less (Gamestop used to sell the Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt combo cartridge for 29 cents). |

I think there have been times when SMB/DH was available for $0.01, but I'm not sure how often that was.
I'm not sure what its most expensive price at Gamestop was. A dollar-something? Maybe. I actually bought another used copy of it once, because it came with a manual, and my original manual was worn to shreds. Believe it or not, SMB (just SMB, not the Duck Hunt dual cart) was available around here new at Best Buy, even around the N64 era. |

The K-Mart near where I lived in NJ had an unopened copy of NES Renegade sitting behind the glass in the game section for years and years and years with a red price sticker on it that read $49.99. I'm pretty sure it was there way into the N64/PS1 era, too.

The weird thing about the SMB, though, was that I did NOT see it around the NES era. (Heck, I'd bet most NES fans have not seen a new Super Mario Bros., by itself, because most copies of that game were sold with systems) It seemed to come out of *nowhere*, maybe in the middle of the SNES era. It makes me wonder where it came from, how it ended up there, any why. (Maybe when the top loader NES came out, some stores got SMB by itself, but anyway)
In the N64 era, some stores had $70 SNES games sitting around, like Street Fighter Alpha 2. Who were they kidding? |

I recall seeing NES games in a really old K-Mart when it was the N64 era. I had sold my NES at that point, so I didn't have any purchases to make anyway, but I do recall that they were a little higher than I expected them to go for.
The first game I owned was the SMB/Duck Hunt dual copy. I didn't know that SMB existed by itself until I came on the internet. |

I remember when Gamestop was new to me, maybe the second time I went in one, either before the Gamecube was even released or when it was fairly new, they had brand new sealed copies of Plok for five bucks. I should have picked one up, but I guess I was deterred by the ugly box art.
Later I got just the cartridge from them for five bucks and found that the actual game is quite pretty, almost proto-Yoshi's Island. |

Quote: I seem to remember buying the solo SMB game brand new from Toys R Us. It was near the end of the NES's lifespan. I didn't have the zapper at the time. I'll have to check my collection next time I'm home to verify that I have it. |

This week is Xevious (NES), R-Type III (SNES), and Moto Roader (TG16). Nothing for me.
