Some reasons I'm skeptical of, say, Mother 3 -

#1, how many games do we need like this, anyway? Earthbound for the SNES was already pretty close to the Dragon Warrior games in terms of gameplay. Where else was there to go with the concept? Or, if there was anywhere else to go, why didn't Earthbound already go there, itself being a sequel to "Mother"?

#2, the idea of the story is that you're a little kid who gets wrapped up in an adventure, almost by accident. This plot has a lot of appeal to people, because I'm sure many, many kids (if not all kids) have fantasized about this. It is the basis of It, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Invaders from Mars.

However, while being a kid that gets caught up in ONE adventure with outer space enemies is something that you can desire or envy or identify with, being a little kid that gets caught up in THREE adventures is not. You can't identify with that if you haven't even been on the first two.
