I also think that part of the problem is how tight the competition is these days. Back in the NES and Super NES eras, Nintendo would often make, or at least publish, unusual little titles like StarTropics, Earthbound, and Faxanadu to name a few. But games like that, supposedly, didn't sell as well as the bigger-name titles like Mario and Zelda, so Nintendo probably doesn't want to take risks releasing unusual games anymore. If they're going to make an adventure game, they'll just make it a Zelda game so that it'll sell becaue of the name recognition.

I guess one exception is Pikmin which I suppose does fall into the category of unusual and unheard-of title.
