I also played some of Super R-Type, which I know is not considered such a good game compared to the rest of the series.

I assume you're emulating this game? I don't know how well this game runs under emulation, but on an actual SNES, it had terrible, terrible slow down. At the best of times, the game ran about only 80% as fast as it should have (when the game begins, only your ship is on the screen, and for about a second it runs as fast as it should. But then something else appears on screen and it falls right down). At the worst of times, the rapidly alternates between sort of slow and crippling slow, so that you're fighting slowdown more than anything else.

Even if the slowdown was fixed, though, the game still wouldn't be good.

Anyway, since you're playing a SNES game anyway, R-Type III is also available. It's not nearly as good as the best R-Type games, but unlike Super R-Type, it is at least worth playing.
