I explored the Carrington Institute a bit. One of the harder things I've done in a game lately is beat mission 7 of the holograph training. This really comes out of nowhere - the other 6 missions are all extremely easy. (One of the first ones simply involves looking around!!) The last one, however, has you, unarmed, facing off against two unarmed opponents and three armed opponents. And if you take a single hit (even a punch from an unarmed opponent), you instantly lose. At first, this part seemed simply impossible. Consider: There's no way to really dodge bullet fire. It's not like in, say, Contra, where you can just jump over the bullets. In this game, bullets travel basically infinitely fast. And these guys aren't poor shots. The room is almost entirely open, so you have no cover from the enemies, and since there's three armed enemies, even if you can somehow knock out one, the others will target you instantly. The only cover in the room is a small hallway off to the side. However, if you are unarmed, the armed enemies will never pursue you there. And it seemed as though as soon as I'd poke my head out of the hall way, the enemies would bulls eye me immediately.

Well, I have enough experience with games to know that if something seems this impossible, there must be some trick to it.

To clarify, "one of the harder things I've done in a game lately", I don't know how many tries or time it took. But I probably averaged staying alive for 15 seconds per attempt. Even if I only tried for an hour, that's a fair number of deaths.

I also tried the shooting range. I got bronze medals in every weapon but the reaper (which I think is kind of a sucky weapon, and have thought so even before I tried the shooting range. It usually takes about 50 rounds to kill an enemy, though part of the problem is that the weapon cannot start nor stop firing on command. Sometimes it seems to just lock up for no reason). I even got a couple of gold medals.

Aside from the shooting range, I believe I finished everything else in the Carrington institute. The item training was pretty easy and straightforward.

I just noticed for the first time that (unlock in Goldeneye) it's possible to use cheats in stages you haven't beaten.
