I was able to finish that mission without resorting to easy mode. The main goal was to get an item from each of the three enemy strongholds (and preferably to make their stronghold and its resources your own)

Since I had three bases already (my original one and two of their three), I decided that when the enemy attacked one base, I would just move the hero (most important character by far) and the rest of the troops to another base, and let the enemy waste time destroying what I left behind. I was able to finish the mission long before they could do enough damage to really mess things up.

I haven't mentioned this, but you don't have an infinite amount of time to finish these levels either. Every building you create and every new character you make takes up Gold. There are usually around three gold mines on each level. And if you run out, you really have to finish up quickly because you won't be able to replace troops you lose or rebuild damaged buildings.

The next mission seems tough, but I've only just started. You have to take a particular part of the enemy territory. But there's also an enemy base that keeps sending small numbers of troops at you. And they also send runners to get reinforcements. You have to deal with their constant attacks, take care of the runners before they reach their destination, and still try to build up your own forces. Destroying the enemy base is optional, but it seems like the only way to make the rest of the mission easy enough to handle.

I really love this game so far. One of the highest quality titles I've played in a really long time.
