Well, I think it certainly has a point... and that it can be enjoyed without knowing what everything means, or how the ending is relevant. The characters are interesting, the acting is good, and it's not like the entire thing is completely incomprehensible.

What it comes down to is that it's very hard to understand why things happened the way they did, and what Donnie's purpose was, without doing further research afterwards.

Almost as if the writer had the ideas for this complex story that DOES make a lot of sense on paper, as much as a weird sci-fi movie can. There just aren't the kinds of clues a casual viewer would need to make much out of it, especially during the 1st viewing.

The Director's Cut has extra hints in the form of pages from a fictional book called "The Philosophy of Time Travel". This book is mentioned within the movie, and is read by Donnie. But as I understand, only this cut of the film actually shows you relevant parts of it onscreen as the story develops. It really helped me out, but I still found out I was pretty far off about a lot of things once I found the forums and web sites about the film.
