Here's the Japanese title screen with the font that's in the American ROM, but unused.

Here's the Japanese Snake/Slither Beast. Only one is represented instead of three and the palette is different. (The Vampire Bats are the same way - three in the American, only one in the Japanese - but I wasn't able to survive long enough in the Japanese version to get into a battle with one.)

Gnome/Sprite's palette is much different. Other enemies like the Kobolds and Assassins were the same, though.

Now for the Sorpigal Gallery...

First of all, the plaques that are the same on both versions:

The chessboard plaque exists in both versions, but it is hidden on the US version in an area way far away from the rest of the gallery, whereas on the JP version, it's in with the rest of the plaques.

The Gala plaque looks the same on both versions.

The Wheel of Luck plaque is the same for both...

The Castle Doom plaque is the same for both, although the door is much fucking harder to unlock on the Japanese version! I had to keep reloading a save state and trying over and over again. Must've taken 20 tries before I survived the impact of the trap that got sprung upon opening it, whereas on the US version, I opened it right away on my first try.

Plaques exclusive to the US release:

The Treasure Chest plaque is new.

Corak's plaque is new.

The Dragon plaque is only on the US version.

This one is only on the US version.

Plaques exclusive to the Japanese version:

This rather generic looking stone tablet was removed from the US release.

The hidden area beyond the gallery itself had the chessboard plaque on the US version. On the JP version, this plaque is there instead - an empty frame with a goat's head.

An hourglass plaque!! I wouldn't doubt this is talking about The Land That Time Forgot, which indeed has an hourglass on a hill like that. I kind of wish this one had been in the US release.

Where the Dragon plaque is on the US release is the Owl plaque on the JP version.
