While the game describes switches being on walls in quite a few spots, I'm pretty sure they

Nevermind. These aren't switches, they're either doorknobs or bolts. The doors in the towns have them, but I just never took notice of them before.

On Lord Kilburn... I always thought, from his picture, the reason he was in exile was because he was cursed and turned into a monster - kind of like Beauty and the Beast, and I figured since he had the Desert map, he was probably the original king of Castle Dragadune. But knowing what we do now about that unused boss fight, your theory makes sense, too.
That's very plausible, too, and one of the reasons I say that my theory could just be wild ass speculation, but the problem is that you have to infer all of that about Kilburn on your own. There's nothing in the game that says or implies why he's a monster living in exile, other than the picture itself, so it's just as easy to guess that the picture might have been intended for something else. Even though a "Kilburn" shows up in other Might & Magic games, from what I've read there's nothing about him in those games that could explain what's going on here.

This blog has a screenshot of the Kilburn confrontation in the PC version. The PC version didn't have any kind of profile pictures, apparently, and the dialogue is identical to the NES version. So, you can't even look there for answers.

I should also note that Sheltem is not a boss in the PC version, either, so if he had made it into the NES version, it would have been an exclusive. A part of me wonders if that might have had something to do with him getting the axe. Since Sheltem appears in many of the M&M sequels, maybe someone felt it wasn't right to have him be defeated in the first game (not that that ever stops any other video game villains).
