The "becoming a god" thing didn't seem to serve much purpose, either, because Father didn't have much of an endgame in mind.
I originally wrote a lengthly post explaining my interpretation of Father's character and the importance of the whole "becoming a god" thing to the series as a whole but I lost it. >.< Well I'll try to reiterate what I wrote. I'll try to be brief but I can't promise anything, since I've put a LOT of thought into this ever since first reading the series and I can't help but be a little verbose.

The "villain who wants to become a god" thing is very common, particularly in anime and video games. While the way it's done in FMA isn't exactly original, it's at least done really well. I have seen a lot of stories where the villain has really no motivation to become a god other than being a colossal dick or wanting power for power's sake. Nor often does it have such thematic relevance to the story, often done just to make the villain more imposing, sometimes coming out of nowhere to the plot. And they didn't go for the usual "becoming a god to remake the world because the villain perceives it as imperfect" cliche, which is nice.
