I should probably also mention that I have night blindness.  Simply letting my eyes adjust to the darkness doesn't really solve the problem.

Would that even have an effect? My understanding is that night blindness is caused by an issue with the rods, whereas I'm sure even a 3D movie is mostly perceived with cones. When I get my night vision, things are predominantly in black and white (it's also supposedly mostly peripheral vision, but I don't notice that consciously as much), and 3D movies are not like that for me.

Boy, it's interesting how differently different people perceive the world.

I went outside last night briefly to put out the cat food for the strays. I was astonished by how bright it was, around midnight (the only thing is, I think the strays have a schedule, and some come by much earlier than that, so I missed them). It's hardly the first time I've noticed that, but I still think it's interesting, how big of an effect light pollution has. And most of the light is coming from the sky, which was sort of magenta, not local sources like street lights.

On the other hand, there was a time when I lived in the country and worked the sunshine shift at Fed Ex, so I left the house to go to work around 3 am. There was a HUGE noticeable difference in how bright it was when there was a full moon, compared to how pitch black it was when it was a new moon. I normally don't get a chance to notice that, and it was surprising. There are parts in the novel Frankenstein when the monster is talking about running through the woods by the light of the full moon, and when I first read it I was skeptical that that would work.

(Also, sometimes when you're heading into the country and look back towards the city, you can see the magenta glow hanging over it).

Going back to the rod/cones thing, I hear it's possible to have night vision and normal vision active by using only red lights (which rods are insensitive to). That seems like it would be an interesting effect, though I haven't experienced it.
